How do you measure blue (HEV) light protection?Blue (HEV) light protection is tested by measuring the ability of the formula to block light in the HEV spectrum that would otherwise reach the skin. In practice, this is done by applying the formula to a transparent substrate at the same dose level (2mg/cm2) used in the FDA Monograph SPF test. The substrate is then placed at the entrance of an integrating sphere detector which captures all the light passing through the sample. This configuration is the same as that used in the FDA Monograph Critical Wavelength measurement and mimics the situation of a formula applied to the skin. The percentage of HEV light blocked is calculated by comparing the intensity of the light transmitted through the formula to the incident light at each wavelength throughout the HEV spectrum (400–490 nm).

A rectilinear lens is a lens that preserves orthogonality: two straight, perpendicular lines in the real world are depicted as straight, perpendicular eyes by a rectilinear lens. A fisheye lens, on the other hand, distorts them — a small price to pay for an extremely wide field of view!

Why the tiny iii, you ask? This formula holds for all the three possible directions on the sensor: horizontal, vertical, and diagonal.

Since this is a zinc oxide formula, will it leave a white cast or residue on my skin?No, unlike other mineral SPF products, Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Face Shield SPF 50 was formulated with proprietary EnviroScreen™ Technology using patented zinc oxide. In addition, iron oxides result in a universal shade, leaving no white cast for all skin tones.

That is an extremely wide angle of view: it covers 170017001700 square degrees! However, you need almost 20 of these fields to capture a true 260°260\degree260° picture.

As a rule of thumb, the higher the magnification of the lens is, the smaller the angle of view. If you manage to fit the Moon in your picture, the vertical angle of view would be around half a degree, but this feat requires a pretty high magnification. On the other hand, a 55 mm55\ \text{mm}55 mm lens on an SLR (single-lens reflex) camera will give you a horizontal angle of view of about 20°20\degree20°.

The angle of view of a camera is an absolute measure of the horizontal and vertical angles captured by a combination of camera and lens. The field of view measures the same concept but uses lengths. Since the angles don't change, the field of view depends on the distance: specifically, it increases alongside it.

A camera captures a rectangular portion of the real world, projecting it onto its sensor. We identified two possible ways to measure the size of that portion:

Even if angles are easy to visualize, they can be hard to estimate (how wide is 5°5\degree5°?). The field of view comes in handy to complement the idea of the angle of view.

How do you measure pollution protection?We measure our pollution protection by directly measuring free radicals created from UV + pollution events on unprotected skin and skin protected with Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Face Shield SPF 50. We use a testing technique called electron spin resonance (ESR) that uses a combination of a magnetic field and electron magnetic waves to directly detect the unpaired electrons of free radicals.

Can you explain how adherence/water- and sweat- resistance is tested?Colorescience® follows the FDA guidelines for testing water resistance or adherence to the skin after exposure to water. A panel of 10 people applies the product to their skin prior to being immersed in a whirlpool (of moving or circulating water) for 20-minute cycles. After 20 minutes in the whirlpool, panelists exit the whirlpool before immersing themselves again. For 40 minutes of water resistance, panelists are immersed in the water for two 20-minute cycles. For 80 minutes of water resistance, this is done a total of 4 times. After all, cycles are completed, the SPF that is remaining on the skin is measured. If after 80 minutes in the whirlpool, the SPF remaining is at least 50, the result is an SPF 50 with 80 minutes of water resistance.

The solid angle covered by this set-up is about 272727 square degrees for the vertical one! If you want to take a 360°360\degree360° picture, you'll need more than 150015001500 shots! But at a distance of 200 m200\ \text{m}200 m you would be able to picture an area of 45 m×30 m45\ \text{m}\times 30\ \text{m}45 m×30 m: good enough to take some exciting wildlife pictures without disturbing anyone!
