If you can get to the Path of Totality, you may safely remove the glasses only once the Moon completely covers the Sun to fully enjoy the spectacle. Immediately look away and put the glasses back on the moment the Sun even slightly reappears from behind the Moon’s silhouette. In Canada, the maximum duration of totality will only last up to about 3½ minutes at Niagara Falls beginning at approximately 3:18 p.m. The duration will be shorter at points to the east and begin later. Use these eclipse glasses safely and enjoy!
On April 8, 2024, most of North America will experience a total eclipse of the Sun. Within that large area is the “Path of Totality,” a narrow band along the Earth’s surface where the Sun will be completely blocked by the Moon for up to a few minutes at some point during the day. The closer you are to the centre of this path, the longer totality will last. Outside this narrow path the eclipse is only partial. Here is a map showing the Path of Totality in Canada.

If you’re viewing the eclipse from Toronto, or anywhere else not experiencing totality, you must wear the glasses at all times during the eclipse. The entire eclipse lasts about 2½ hours from end to end. Put the glasses on before looking up and look down before removing them. Be sure to supervise children during the eclipse. On a sunny day leading up to the eclipse, feel free to practise this procedure with them using these eclipse glasses. See the photo to the right of our two adorable models. The maximum extent of the eclipse occurs at approximately 3:19 p.m. EDT.
For those in the Toronto area, this is a once in a lifetime event. The next total eclipse visible from that general area of Canada doesn’t happen until 2079.
Space Place Canada is making multiples of eclipse glasses available to organizations and individuals willing to donate. We are not supplying individual glasses due to the high cost of shipping. Our starting threshold is a $100 donation for 10 glasses.
