In an interview with the FT’s Callum Tennant, our co-founder and CEO, Jean-Francois Morizur, shared how Cailabs started in telecommunications and later discovered applications for its laser technology in aerospace. "At the beginning, we were simply responding to a highly customized request from one of our clients,” he said. ✨ Two weeks ago in Osaka, Gwenn Pallier, Product Manager at Cailabs, had the opportunity to contribute to an insightful discussion on trends in laser beam shaping and delivery at the 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, organized by Optica. Gwenn led a dynamic two-hour session in the 𝐏𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐊𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐚 format (20 slides, 20 seconds per slide), showcasing both academic and industrial perspectives. The session featured several industry experts who highlighted significant advancements: 🔹 Dr. Markus Kogel-Hollacher (Precitec - Laser Material Processing) shared how AI, combined with beam shaping—including Cailabs solutions—can optimize welding processes for e-mobility. 🔹 Stephen Kidd (PowerPhotonic) illustrated the use of beam shaping in both micro and macro processing, as well as in Coherent Beam Combining. 🔹 Bryan Germann (Aerotech, Inc.) demonstrated how high-speed micro-drilling can be achieved through unique scanning and translation solutions. 🔹 Yu Takiguchi (Hamamatsu Corporation) presented on dynamic beam shaping using SLMs for precision micro-drilling. 🔹 Jean Sauvage-Vincent (GLOphotonics) discussed the delivery of ultra-short pulse lasers using hollow-core fibers. 💡 The session also covered key industry challenges such as recruitment, supply chain issues, and economic pressures, alongside emerging research topics like lower wavelengths, higher power, and increased flexibility. 📚 On the academic side, Beat Neuenschwander (Berner Fachhochschule BFH) showcased high-efficiency femtosecond laser texturing enabled by advanced beam shaping and Karen Schwarzkopf (Lehrstuhl für Photonische Technologien der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) gave an engaging presentation on how Civan Lasers can be used to observe material temperature evolution and the effects of applied shaping during processing. 🔗 To wrap up, Gwenn asked each speaker about their key aspirations for the future of laser technology.
