Magic Black Infrared Reflective Sheeting is made with either SOLAS3 or ECONOMY reflective backing. The magnet is the highest quality 30 mil magnet made for use on vehicles that travel on bumpy roads at high speeds. Military Grade Magic Magic Black Infrared Reflective Magnetic Sheeting is made with SOLAS3. The Magic Black Economy Infrared Reflective Magnetic Sheeting is made with 3M reflective sheeting. SOLAS sheeting is visible from helicopter heights. The Economy sheeting look is as reflective as SOLAS3 only up to 30 feet. After 30 feet, SOLAS3 is far more visble than the Economy sheeting. Blemished Sheets 20"x 11" MAGIC BLACK Solas3™ ADHESIVE BACKED SHEETS Our large print runs ( over 400 sheets at a time) yeild several blemished sheets. Blemished sheets may have tiny white dots, touch ups that didn't blend in, dirt particles in the ink, streaks of darker black or lighter black, odd textures in the solas or other solas material defects. Blemished sheets are completely functional and do not effect the IR Reflectivity of the sheet.

What transmits infrared light

As I often say, “garbage in, garbage out”. The more accurate measurements you make, the more accurate your results will be.

Using these techniques, you could actually find out what an un-marked lens’ focal length is. You could also verify (or debunk) manufacturer claims about the real focal length of a lens.

I happen to have a fun little laser that can make extremely accurate measurements over long distances. I used this device to get my targets placed within a millimeter, and to measure the camera-to-subject distance.

IR Magic Black Solas3™ sheets are actually 21" x 12", but there is small border around the outside edge that is un-coated, so they are sold as a 20"x11" IR Magic Black Solas3™ is NOT THERMAL material, and will not glow when viewed with a thermal viewer or camera.

IR Magic Black Solas3™ and Raw Reflective Solas3™ come in many die cut sizes with Vlecro backing, or adhesive. IR Magic Black Solas3™ and Raw Reflective Solas3™, are sold in full sheets 20"x11" and come in adhesive backed, Gold ( mylar backed) , or sew-on fabric SOLAS (fabric is 3M)

All three types of Solas3™ ( adhesive, mylar backed and fabric) can be sewn with an industrial sewing machine.  Special considerations must be taken to sew Solas successfully.   When sewing to a suitable fabric or to a piece of velcro, use thread comparable to #69 nylon or a equivalent acceptable thread. Sew a 301 or 3/16 inch (4.75 mm) lockstitch using 5-12 stitches per inch. We do recommend that you test the sewn final product to ensure the results are acceptable for your application. Stitches averaging 7-9 stitches per inch would give better tear-strength results. Using a titanium needle is suggested when sewing thick layers. Sewing Solas3™  or 3M Fabric Solas may require cleaning the sewing needle with a glue remover at regular intervals to prevent thread snapping.  There is a very strong adhesive which bonds the 3M Fabric Solas layers to each other, this will gum up the sewing needle, making embroidery of 3M Fabric Solas impossible.

What color reflects infrared light

For both setups, the angular measurement from the lens axis to the frame edge is called ‘Angle’, measured in degrees. The FOV of the lens is twice the value of ‘Angle’.

My setup was on a tile floor, and I used the tile grout lines to make sure the lens axis was exactly perpendicular to the wall. You could also temporarily tape a little mirror against the wall and line up the camera until you see your reflection in the center of the camera’s field of view.

I made all of the distance measurements relative to the lens axis and to a spot on the lens that I guessed to be near the vertex of the red arrows shown in the diagram. You don’t really need to know this location, since these techniques will actually calculate the location.

As shown above, I put some tape targets on the wall that point at the edges of the field of view and the exact center of the frame. I made sure that the distances on either side of the middle of the frame exactly matched. I also made sure that the lens was at exactly the same height as the middle wall target. Using high magnification via Live View or the viewfinder helps getting the targets more precise.

To get all of the necessary information, you’ll need to set up some targets on a wall (I used painter’s tape) and then take distance measurements at two different camera-to-wall distances.

One reason you might like to measure this stuff, versus just reading the lens focal length stamped on the lens, is that manufacturers often lie about the true lens focal length. This is particularly true of long zooms, which might not be as long as claimed. It’s often the case that a lens focal length reduces drastically when focusing close (called focus breathing), and these techniques could attach real numbers to that.
