Let’s try to understand optical density through an illustration in a simplified manner using a comparison between two mediums.

Take two mediums namely air and water. When light propagates from air to water medium we observe a shift or bend in the path of light towards the normal and this is because of the nature of the media that led to shifting due to the change of speed of light. Here, in this case, the speed of light appears to slow down because the water is optically denser than the air medium and hence causing a hindrance in the path of light.

We often confuse optical density with mass and relative density just because the density term is common in both but this is not so. Here are some key differences between mass Density and optical density are listed as follows:

Optical Density is the measure of degree by which any particular media slows down the speed of transmitted radiation or causes intensity loss when light or any radiation passes through any optical component.

Absorbance is the measure of capacity of a medium to absorb the transmitted radiation of a specific wavelength.It is the transfer of energy of wave to the matter during the transmission of radiation through the matter.

It is expressed as the logarithmic ratio between the incident radiant power (incident radiant power is referred as the power of radiation or light when it incidented or hits the material) to the transmitted radiant power( transmitted radiant power is referred as the power of radiation or light as it leaves the material).

The optical density measurement is an important method to quantify various parameters like cell concentration, production of biomass etc.

Optical density is referred to as the property of the material (transparent material) that basically deals with the measurements of transmission of light through the material. It is a unitless quantity. The density here is not the ratio of mass and volume. It is the measure of the compactness of particles in matter.

Clearly from the definition and mathematical expression we can observe that optical density is the ratio of two like quantities. Therefore, it has no scientific units and hence a unitless quantity.

From the definition, an optical density of any media can be derived as a logarithmic ratio of the intensity of incident radiation (radiation falling on the matter) to the intensity of transmitted radiation (radiation emitting from the matter).

This ability to block light by introducing hindrance in its path is called optical density and the ability to bend light at the interface of the two media is termed refraction. Thus, the higher the optical density, the slower the speed and vice versa.
