A new award of $4.5M is set to fund CHIRP, the CHanneled Infrared Polarimeter, a compact tool that can provide scientists with extremely accurate data essential, and previously unattainable across all conditions, for long-term climate change modeling. Principal Investigator (PI) Meredith Kupinski, associate professor of optical sciences at the Wyant College of Optical Sciences, and Science PI Sylvia Sullivan, assistant professor of chemical and environmental engineering at the College of Engineering, are leading the project as part of NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) Instrument Incubator Program (IIP). The Instrument Incubator Program funds novel instruments, like CHIRP, to launch new technologies for future Earth-observing missions focused on pursuing pressing Earth science phenomena.

Clarissa DeLeon, optical sciences PhD student advised by Associate Professor Meredith Kupinski, won a SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) best presentation award in the session Mechanical and Other Engineering, for her oral presentation titled "Mapping Sky Polarization Under Different Atmospheric Conditions," at the 2024 National Diversity in STEM (NiDSTEM) Conference, held in Phoenix from October 31 to November 2.

Attaching a 1.88x teleconversion lens to a 72 mm lens gives an angle of view equivalent to a 135 mm medium telephoto lens.

With a zoom lens, when you turn on macro mode and move as close as possible while still keeping the subject in focus, the minimum distance to the subject and the size of the subject in the frame will differ depending on whether the lens is at a wide-angle or telephoto zoom position. With a wide-angle setting you may be too close and with a telephoto setting you may be too far away so adjust the focal length to find the one that makes it easiest to take the shots you want.

This colloquium will give a brief introduction to reservoir computing, an overview of its theoretical foundations, including the notion of a universal family of reservoir computers that is capable of approximating a certain family of nonlinear maps from input sequences to output sequences, as well as its inherent limitations. It will then motivate and touch on efforts by the speaker and his collaborators to exploit noisy near-term quantum computers as quantum reservoir computers. Finally, the colloquium will conclude with a discussion of research directions for further development of quantum reservoir computers as well as research trends in the broader recent efforts on engineered physical learning machines going beyond reservoir computers.

To make it easier to understand angle of view, focal length is often expressed as "__ mm equivalent," which means it has been converted to the 35 mm film camera format that has been historically the most common. The distance from the center of the lens to the image focal point (=image sensor surface) is known as the focal length. It is expressed in millimeter (mm) units. A lens with a short focal length is a wide-angle lens and one with a long focal length is a telephoto lens.
