Also- why do people refer to "shorter/longer" for aperture/F-stop? Isn't it by definition a hole; therefore, shouldn't it be referred to as "larger/smaller?"

Very new to this community and learning quickly by experimenting. My question is this: I have a Nikkor 24-200mm, F/4-6.3 VR lens and while shooting, I noticed that walking backwards and zooming in increases the bokeh effect. I'm wondering how this is the case if the f-stop number increases as I zoom (i.e. smaller aperture)? I always thought that a larger aperture number leads to a larger field of depth->decreased bokeh, not the other way around. I presume the focal length must also playing a factor in this?
