Before I invested in a magnifying light I had an undeniable need for more light. I just couldn’t plan my entire day depending on the amount of light in my craft room.

For needle painting projects a magnifying light is really one of the most important tools. For example in my two projects below, the Realistic Butterfly and the Daisies pattern, it would have been virtually impossible for me to see the fine stitches and create a detailed and seamless color blending without using a magnifying lamp.

I don’t really remember exactly the time it took me to put it together, but that’s a good thing! If I don’t remember, it means it was smooth enough. I also love its flexible head, you can literally move it in any position you can imagine and I do that all the time as I like stitching in all sorts of places around the house.

I was looking for a white light magnifying lamp, steady and flexible enough to be able to move it around where I need to. I am usually very conscious about the environment in everything I do on a business and personal level, so energy efficiency was a big thing when choosing my lamp.

Yes, you can replace the circular LED if needed. I never had to do it in a year of use, but it can be replaced if needed.

Another example I want to share with you is the Peculiar People pattern below. Well (laughing), it’s really hard not to see the difference between the two versions. I stitched the left one before investing in a magnifying lamp, while the right one was stitched after.

“Distance of distinct vision” is the distance between eyes and object in which we can see the object clearly without tension or fatigue. It is supposed to be 250 mm (=4 diopter) since ancient age. The reason that 25 – 30 cm distance is recommended for book reading is also distinct vision distance. By the way, elasticity and adjustability of eye lens is getting lower as aging and object can hardly be seen unless locating it further than distance of distinct vision. This is so called Presbyopia.

”Longitudinal magnification α” is a ratio of “minute transfer amount ⊿x’” of image against “minute transfer amount ⊿x” of object along optical axis. In other words, it means sensitivity on focus out.

In case of general object distance in machine vision, the formula can be easily found with above mentioned “longitudinal magnification α” because “depth of field DoFi” is “depth of focus DoFo” which is shifted to object side through lens.

I put together a list of products to suit different budgets and preferences. Please note that I haven’t tested all of them, the products listed below are based on their specifications that make them ideal for hand embroidery and also on the reviews they got over the years.

While I did a few other mistakes when stitching the left one (like not outlining the area before filling it with Satin Stitch), what I’m trying to show you is that a magnifying light comes in handy not only in needle painting projects. It really does make a huge difference in any hand embroidery project.

Let “permissible circle of confusion CoC” be larger one of “pixel pitch Ppix” or “airy disk diameter Dairy”. “Depth of field DoFi” can be found with dividing “depth of focus DoFo” by “longitudinal magnification α”.

In case of zoom lens, used in digital camera or video camera, magnification of 3x, 6x or 30x are indicated. This is called “zoom ratio” and it means ratio between focal length of longer side (tele side) and shorter side (wide side). For example, zoom ratio of zoom lens which focal length can be adjusted 8 – 80 mm is 10x.

My honest advice is to get the highest quality magnifying light you can afford. You’ll definitely not regret investing in one and you won’t ever go back!

The DMC clamp to hoop magnifying glass or something like it? Its sold in Europe, but not in the US. Any other manufacturers of something similar that you might know of?

This is probably the most asked question. There are so many magnifying lights on the market to choose from that it can easily become hard to make a decision.

Since during the day I’m caught up with other tasks, most of my stitching happens during the evenings when the house is quiet and I don’t get interrupted every ten minutes. Without a magnifying light, it would be practically impossible to do that.

So I did my research and bought the best magnifying light I could afford at that time, without really knowing how much I needed it.

As taking lens in image forming optical system shoots real image, “Lateral magnification β”, size ratio, can be calculated by direct measurement of object and image. On the other hand, in case of tele scope and binoculars, real image made by objective lens is seen as virtual image through eyepiece. They are in a special optical system as incident light and outgoing light is parallel to optical axis. In this optical system, called “afocal system” or “no focus optical system”, “angular magnification γ”, which is a ratio of inclination angle u’ between light from object and optical axis to inclination angle u’between light to image and optical axis, is used for magnification m.1

Ratio of length change by optical system is called “magnification”. Taking lenses used in photo or machine vision are included in “Image forming optical system”. In the term of “magnification m”, there are “lateral Magnification β” and “longitudinal magnification α”. β indicates ratio in size of concerned object and image while α indicates ratio in optical axis. These will be explained in next chapter. In case of magnification in size, it is called “equal magnification”, “1-fold magnification” or “1x” if image and object are the same in size. The value is more than1 such as “2-fold magnification”, “2 power” or “2x” in case of expansion while it is less than 1 such as “0.5-fold magnification” or “0.5x” in case of shrinking. Furthermore, the sign of magnification (Lateral magnification, β) is negative (-: minus) as image is usually inverted.

From jewelry making to miniature painting, hand embroidery, cross-stitch, sewing, or knitting, regardless of what your craft is, you’ll probably need a magnifying lamp in your life. Let’s explore together what to look for when buying a magnifying lamp and which ones are best suited for hand embroidery.

According to this formula, the smaller the F number (brighter) of lens, the smaller the pixel pitch of sensor and the larger the optical magnification (enlargement) the narrower the depth of field. Incidentally, “depth of field DoFi” is applicable to short object distance case such as machine vision, however, the depth is significantly different between the front side and the back side of the object in long object distance case such as surveillance camera. In this case, “depth of field DoFi” is found with “depth of focus DoFo” and “Newton’s lens formula”3.

Magnifying glass is also in optical system to see virtual image. Magnification m can be calculated as a ratio of “distance of distinct vision of 250 mm” and “focal length of f”.

I also have an eleven years old daughter that is spending a lot of her time in the craft room. So the dust cover comes in really handy in case of any scratches. We all know how anything can “accidentally” happen with a kid around (laughing).

Another brand I would really like to try is the Daylight Company, which has a really good reputation among more experienced embroiderers. Daylight’s magnifying lamps use top-quality, daylight LEDs to ensure a bright light with high levels of contrast and are perfect for color-matching. Until then, I’ll be happily using my Purelight one.

Before you commit, consider these essential factors: the type of lens, ergonomy, head of the lamp, functionality, energy efficiency, and budget.

This means that object can be seen in the same size as if observer comes close to it in 1/γ distance. As magnification gets bigger, the structure becomes bigger as well as viewable range becomes narrower and image becomes darker because “exit pupil” becomes smaller. Binoculars with specifications of 6 to 8-foldmagnification and 30 – 42 mm in diameter2 is manly used for bird watching for its portability. While that with specifications of 7 – 18-foldmagnification and 50 – 70 mm in diameter is mainly used for star watching. Binoculars of high magnification are usually used with tripod to mount. Meanwhile, that of around 10-foldmagnification with stabilizing mechanism is getting popular for theater use recently. Exit pupil is calculated with formula as “lens diameter ÷ magnification”, and it get hard to see if it is smaller than eye pupil. Because of this reason, binoculars with exit pupil of more than 3 mm are used in daytime, and that with more than 5 mm is used in nighttime or dark place. Binoculars with compact size and high magnification are sold as popular type. Due to smaller exit pupil, their view might be dark or visibility might be lost by eye movement (black out). Careful use is required for these types of binoculars.

Hi. I have looked everywhere for the PURELITE CFPL20 MAGNIFYING CIRCULAR LED LAMP. I tried Amazon & they accepted my order, then cancelled it due to not available. I ordered from Ebay and they accepted the order then cancelled it. I tried Etsy and they accepted the order and now saying that it’s too much to send to the US. Do you know anywhere I could purchase this lamp. It seems so weird that I can get the lamp. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you, Cathy

What I would normally do is clamp it on a small Ikea bedside table and basically carry it around the house, depending on my mood and project requirements.

On top of that, to be completely honest with you, everywhere I looked, all experienced stitchers mentioned using a magnifying lamp and then I thought to myself “What respectable embroiderer doesn’t use a magnifying light?” (laughing).

In the machine vision field, optical magnification is important to select taking lens or to consider optical system. However, it is not well known and sometimes confused that magnification has a meaning other than imaging magnification, generally known, which indicates size ratio of object and image. We would like to explain, here, a concept and applications of magnification clearly.

Never had a problem with it, never had to change the LED bulbs, steady as day one, and never felt the need for more light or magnification.

Let me tell you more about my experience with the Purelite brand and why I still love my lamp after almost two years of using it on a daily basis.

While it’s a picturesque place to live in, we don’t get too much sunlight, especially during the cold season. At first, I was silly enough to plan my stitching around the sunlight. Needless to say, that didn’t go well.
