Hello all. I have one mirror scope/lens. its a Celestron C5 1250 mm with a 5 inch Diameter mirror. It has funky astronomy coatings through out optimized to take in any light available. I have a reducer corrector which makes the scope f/6.4 when it is screwed on . It is a completely flat field with it on. A 40% wider field of view, for astro photography at 6.4 its like hours faster it seems, and the stars are literally pin points especially if it is collimated correctly. Ok what does it do You always need a tripod no matter what. 5In in diameter and 14 inches long. weighs something like 5 lbs. with out lenses or camera. The sky the moon is unbelievable no matter what phase. the major planets are very good as ell. stars and double stars are great. The Earth bound stuff I can see ultra far away . On Google Earth i was figuring out where i was looking and I was hitting 6, 8, and about 12-15 miles on one clear day Last year. animals are splendid through it especially birds, and squerls. I took and set it up on a hill side and watched 2 deer fight for a whole morning acrossed the valley were i Live. it has a close focus of 13 feet i think. its like a monster macro lens. Yes you get the dougnuts in any bright rflection but thats easily taken care of in Photoshop. . You can get mirror scopes that are smaller and you can get them where they are to big for survalence work. I have had this one for apx 10 years now and I still seem to not be able to end my curiosity with what it can do. ages ago (permalink)

I've got a little Spiratone Minitel S 300mm f/5.6. I've also got a Soligor C/D 500mm f/8 Macro. You know, it seems odd to me that nobody is really pursuing modern catadioptric lenses. Sony makes the only autofocus cat I've ever seen. I can't imagine myself ever carrying around an 8 1/2 pound Nikon 500mm f/4, but I enjoy shooting hand-held with the little Soligor cat. An extremely long focal length in a very lightweight package. It seems odd to me that Sigma or Tokina isn't selling a full range of modern, high-quality cats with aspheric elements like the old Vivitar 450mm f/4.5 lens. Originally posted ages ago. I just picked up a Tamron SP 500mm with Adaptall-2 for Olympus OM (235 Euros). Got myself a OM to EOS adapter with AF feedback and is now using it with my Canon EOS 30D - getting around 800mm - its very sharp. ages ago (permalink)

I'd buy an AF mirror lens in a heartbeat. As good as digital cameras are getting at high-ISO shooting the speed of mirror lenses isn't even as much of an issue anymore. A 300mm f/4.5 or 300mm f/5.6 mirror lens with AF would be amazing. I went out shooting at 6400 with my 500/8 last night and got some interesting things. I'd love to see a resurgence in popularity for these optics. I even like the bokeh. It's not perfect for everything, but in a lot of instances it's a nice way to completely drop out the background into an almost impressionistic pattern. I like to shoot at concerts a lot and love the way stuff like this works out: Originally posted ages ago. (permalink) robert_rex_jackson edited this topic ages ago.

Of late, getting into a sports stadium with a 23.2cm (9.1") 170-500mm zoom is getting rather tricky. Either the official sports togs get nasty thinking you will steal their syndicated business or the security guards think you are a risk for whatever reason. The short little 500mm mirror gets in every time... I've often thought getting one of those new super zoom compacts or bridge cameras ala Nikon L120 (25 – 525 mm) or Nikon P500 (23 – 810 mm) might be a lot less bother for a stadium however... ages ago (permalink)

I just bought a MC ZM-5CA f/8 500mm lens. I took a 18 photograph panorama that I wanted to compare to a more expensive refractive lens. I also shot panos with a Canon 400mm f2.8, Canon 400mm f2.8 w/ 1.4x teleconverter, and Canon 400mm f2.8 w/ 2x teleconverter. Unfortunately I arrived at the locatation slightly too late and the panos were taken with different shutter speeds and one ISO difference. There is vignetting with a partial frame sensor. I have three but that's just silly... Sirius 500mm f8 in M42 mount Tamron 350mm f5.6 Adaptall/FD Paragon 300mm f5.6 FD I use these with adaptors on my Panasonic G1. 500mm at f8 is just too long and too slow (long and slow is good for some things, but not lenses!) - that extra stop at f5.6 on the shorter mirror lenses works for me, especially with the four thirds crop factor! The 350mm is superb but still a little chunky. The 300mm is miniscule and light - quite a find really. ages ago (permalink)

I have recently changed my Sigma 600 f/8 for a Zuiko (Olympus) 500mm f/8. The change has been great. I loose 100mm in focal lenght, but the Zuiko is sharper and much more compact. I really thing this is the CAT for me. ages ago (permalink)

Just got the Sony 500mm f8 AF Cat. On my A350 the AF annoyingly back focusses so that whatever I focus on is always slightly out of focus. The focus is very reliable in how much it back focusses, which suggests it could be adjusted to autofocus better. I've checked my other lenses and they all back focus slightly to some extent, although mostly it doesn't matter a damn because the back focus is still inside the DoF. So there's room to adjust the AF to focus spot on with the Cat without spoiling focus for anything else. In fact it would also improve focus on my 50mm f1.4 when it's wide open. So far using the adjustment screws around the tripod bush I've taken out a bit more than half the back focus. Before I go any further I need to check the focus error over a wide range of distances. I suspect it differs between close focus and distance. Here's the kind of distant shots it's doing at the moment. That's an uncropped original downsized by 50% because the detail resolution doesn't warrant it being any larger. ages ago (permalink)

I think the reason why no one except Sony/Minolta is making an AF mirror lens is because of the undeserved bad reputation these lenses have. You know, with the advent of in-lens focusing motors (HSM/SDM/etc), it should be easy to make an interchangeable-mount autofocus mirror lens using something like the Tamron Adaptall-II mount but with support for autofocus. I'd certainly buy one. ages ago (permalink)

I don't know if my stuff even applies in this group but it is Catadioptric optics. I am an astrophotographer and for the sake of portability CAT,s are the way to go. I have a Meade 10 inch F10 (2500mm FL) it is fairly useless for anything but the sky. But I also have a Meade 3 1/2 inch ETX 90 F14 (1250mm FL) that is small enough to readily use as a telephoto lens. but this still has its drawbacks, number one being there is almost no way to hand hold it. there is a good thing that comes out of this ordeal, i have decided to break down and get a standard reflex lens in the neighborhood of 500mm. trust me on this one, sometimes bigger is not better. ages ago (permalink)

It a toss-up between the Minolta and the Sigma as which one is the sharpest/best. AS some of the comments above say, they are very cheap compared to "normal" lenses of that focal length. Hi, Terry. I practice quite a bit when I'm going out for birds. Look at an airplane, and practice throwing the camera up, until finding it is easy and it gets to be instinct. Also, try with both eyes open. Once you find the bird, be sure to try to keep it centered, because the center focus sensor is the only one that is active. I like using focus confirmation before letting the camera take the shot, although that can be frustrating if you can't get the bird centered. Keep the shutter at a thousandth or faster, and the stability control off. Have fun with it! ages ago (permalink)

Two, a Sony 500mm f/8 auto-focus, and a Celestron 750mm f/6 schmidt cassagrain design. I enjoy both of them a lot. The 500 is easy to handhold, and tracks flying birds very well. The 750 is best on a tripod because of its larger size, and is a very sharp lens. ages ago (permalink)

You can definitely handhold the 500. It's a little weird tho, I have a couple long lenses, and they're way easier to keep steady. ages ago (permalink)

Recently got me a Rokinon 800mm Mirror and I love using it but impossible to use handheld with that focal length though. I do need to get used to manual focus again. (haven't done that since I stopped using my old Praktica) Too bad Rokinon doesn't have tripod mount on the lens. I'm looking in to how I can fix that, because that thing is weighing my camera body down even when it's on a sturdy tripod. my other lenses are conventional refractors: -Nikkor 18-105 (autofocus) -Sigma 70-300 APO (autofocus) -Beroflex 500 (manual focus) (used to have M42 screw) ages ago (permalink)

I have a Cambron 500/8 purchased in the late 80s, I assume from Cambridge Photo. 'Can't remember what I paid for it. Apparently, this lens was originally manufactured by Kenko Tomioka for Yashica, and then later badged as the Spiratone Minitel-M, and later Cambron. www.photography-forums.com/spiratone-500-mm-mirror-lens-t... According to the linked article, the actual focal length of this mirror is 505mm and the effective aperture f/8.28. Mounted on my K10D, this gives an effective focal length of around 776mm. Even through the K10's normally very bright viewfinder (true pentaprism), the mirror is very difficult to focus precisely because of the darkish view and very narrow depth of field. I use it on my Pentax K10D for a lightweight, powerful, field-imaging device. Unfortunately, the K10's high ISO performance (800/1600) is marginal because of noise. Since I got the excellent Pentax DA 55-300 for my K10, the Cambron has been gathering dust again. If I get a second body with better high ISO performance, like the K-x, that may change. In general, I think mirrors get a lot of bad press primarily because of the much higher degree of skill required to use one successfully. Everybody loves to kick a dog when it's down, but with the right approach, you might be surprised to find that dog can hunt, after all. Virtues: Light weight, inexpensive, long reach, no CA, good color rendition, hand-holdable Recommended for DSLR with in-body shake reduction and good high ISO performance. Best on sunny days. Shot RAW & post-process for levels, unsharp mask, and possibly noise. Originally posted ages ago. (permalink) splinx1 edited this topic ages ago.
