Quinnipiac student Hephzibah Rajan ’23, a computer science major from Muscat, Oman, has been named the 2023 National Engineering Intern Student of the Year by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Mechanical engineering major Rachel Davis ’16 gave the gift of mobility to a toddler with cerebral palsy, modifying a ride-on electric car with the guidance of her professor. She accomplished this impactful project through Quinnipiac University’s Interdisciplinary Program for Research & Scholarship (QUIP-RS) and a car donation from the “Go-Baby-Go” nationwide program. The youngster who received the car was able to control it by simply by moving his head: Accelerometers attached to a small cap enabled him to change speeds with an up-and-down head motion and control steering with a side-to-side motion.

STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) graduates are in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be over 1.12 million jobs in STEM occupations in the next 10 years. The Department of Defense also estimates that more than 80% of jobs will require STEM skills over the next decade.

This opens up a new world to explore media, placing the user directly in the center of their videos to relive moments as if they were there again for the first time. Users can spatially navigate their high-quality 8K 360º footage and relive every experience, bringing unparalleled immersion to users' fingertips—every frame is as vivid and realistic as the moment it was captured.

“I interned with Aetna over the summer after my junior year,” Rajan said. “Initially, I worked on code maintenance which in simple terms is reading code and making sure that each line was being run. I was essentially increasing code coverage. Over time, I started picking up other tasks as well. I learned about their machine-learning models and was also able to propose an alternative method for one of their projects with the help of my mentor."

Percentage of graduating seniors in 2020 who have jobs, are continuing their educations or are starting their own companies within 6 months of graduation.

In addition, STEM-designated programs allow certain international graduates to remain and work in the United States for an additional 24 months after graduation on top of the standard Optional Practical Training period (up to 12 months) in order to receive additional training through their work experience.

Our interdisciplinary approach combines intensive collaboration and hands-on learning in our cutting-edge facilities that include an environmental workshop with an atomic absorption spectrometer; a fluids lab with an advanced hydrology study system; a performance optimization workshop, where you’ll use the driving simulator to analyze a variety of road situations or program an automatic assembly process; and a machine shop where you’ll perform guided fabrication activities.

In your first-semester course, World of an Engineer, you’ll explore the breadth of engineering options while taking common foundational courses during that first year. You’ll benefit from talking to peer mentors, upperclassmen and faculty as your narrow your interests, and you’ll meet with an adviser and career development director to discuss career pathways for each of the four programs.
