Five years ago we started at Delta Optical Thin Film A/S to develop and produce Linear Variable Filters (and although we are very proud of them this is not the story I want to tell). Filters that have a spectral characteristic that changes spatially had been around for several years at that time. So we called them Linear Variable Filters (LVF) as anybody else did.

From beloved smartphones to the professional-grade cameras you’d find in a photographer’s studio, digital cameras allow us to capture the beauty of the world around us. Being able to aim a lens, push a button, and get the perfect shot may seem like magic. Numerous mechanical and optical parts of a camera come together to bring us these crystal-clear depictions of our most cherished moments.
Hi Oliver, I actually understood that term to mean exactly what your filter does. Nice product you got there. I will keep it in mind for potential future use. Thanks for sharing this. Cheers - Ronian.

However, after many discussions with customers and some misunderstandings I came to the conclusion that the term Linear Variable Filter originally meant something different than today's usage.
In short, digital cameras need an excellent image sensor to work properly and provide us with impeccable images. That said, image sensors must be tested, characterized, and calibrated for quality assurance.

With LVF most people today mean a filter whose spectral characteristic, for example center wavelength for a bandpass filter, changes linearly across the filter. But shouldn't it then be called Linearly Variable Filter? Native speakers please help!
I think what Linear Variable Filter originally described is that the spectral change happens along a straight line – irrespective of if the relation between spectral characteristic and position is linear or for example exponential (there are good reasons for this; more about it later). Linear then also describes the typical elongated rectangular shape of this class of variable filters.
The best analogy is with linear variable ND filters where there are circular and rectangular filters. In that case your filters would be rectangular linear variable wavelength filters. Linear variable for me means it is continuous and varies linearly. English is generally built from the last word backwards. Filters. Wavelength Filters. Variable Wavelength Filters. Linear Variable Wavelength Filters. Rectangular Linear Variable Wavelength Filters. Each is a clear subset of the preceding element. It's a nice product, which we are using in the lab.

Once it hits this next stage, your camera’s processor will read the voltage or digital signals as color. From there, all the data your image sensor initially gathered is converted into a high-resolution image. In other words, the image sensor collects the information necessary to create the pictures you love.

My suggestion is to highlight another feature of these filters. As we manufacture them the relation between spectral characteristic and position is continuous. Alas, call them continuously variable filters. BTW, an assembly of discrete filters could also be called circular(ly) or linear(ly) variable.

Image sensors are crucial to capturing beautiful pictures. That alone is enough to make them a benefit to any digital camera system. But there’s also more to it than that. Image sensors don’t just convert light into images. They do so with impressive precision—so much so that we get to enjoy crystal-clear, colorful photographs that wouldn’t have been possible in the past.

There are two different types of image sensors that can be found in most equipment: CMOS and CCD. These two are slightly different but in essence perform the same task within a camera system.

tiled-aperture coherent combining techniques, fine electronic beam steering and automatic aberration compensation (target-in-the-loop phase control) is not.
In contrast to this, also circular variable filters exist. Applying the same argument, I think circular describes that the spectral characteristic changes along a circle – irrespective of the relation between spectral characteristic and angle, which again could be linear or something else. Circular then also describes the circular shape of the filter.

This crucial part of the digital camera known as the image sensor makes it possible for digital cameras to create high resolution, clear, and colorful images with just the click of a button. We’ll talk about how image sensors work within a camera and why they’re beneficial to the advancement of camera technology.
I look forward to reading your opinion! Maybe somebody out there can cast some light on how and when the terms were coined?!

An image sensor is a tiny piece of optical technology within a digital camera system. They receive photons or incident light that’s focused through the lens of a camera or other piece of optical equipment. In other words, the image sensor is the part of your camera that takes in light.
In my past experience with such devices we called them by what they were used for such as "spectrum flattening filters".
We understand that image sensors take in light from the camera’s lens. But what happens after that? Once an image sensor registers incident light, it transfers the information to its next stage, either digital signal or voltage, depending on the sensor type in your camera.
