This also helps to create depth between subject and background. A good example of this can be seen on National or International Newscasts. When a reporter does a stand-up or a sign off you will often see them talking to the camera with a beautiful out of focus street behind them with street and traffic lights becoming an almost abstract image.

While arguably not necessarily an element of composition, Depth of Field has such a great effect on every other compositional element that it should be well understood. Depth of Field is the range of optical focus in a photo. By using certain controls it is possible to have just about everything in your image, foreground and background, in focus or conversely to have only a small region in focus.

Lensfocus

Note: This is not as difficult as a shallow Depth of field. It’s usually what happens by default. Also: use an Aperture Priority setting on your camera to simplify this process.

Try taking a series of shots with a zoom lens. With each shot back away from your subject but zoom in to achieve the same composition. Try to maintain the same exposure if possible.

UV curable (light-curing) bonding adhesive formulations require no heat and shorten customer lead times, improving competitiveness and profitability. UV bonding adhesives are available in a range of viscosities and chemical systems including acrylics, epoxies, polyurethanes, polyesters and silicones. They are an ideal choice for a variety of substrates and joining dissimilar materials such as plastics, metals and glass. UV bonding adhesives exhibit excellent thermal stability, low shrinkage, optical clarity, resistance to thermal cycling, chemicals, moisture, and solvents while meeting safety, health and ecological concerns. Some are even biocompatible for medical use. For parts with shadow areas, a secondary heat cure ensures complete bonding.

Four shots from the above mentioned exercise show how depth of field increases as aperture value increases (as the aperture gets smaller).

UV curable adhesives are used for bonding parts and for pressure sensitive adhesives offering an environmentally friendly, high production rate curing process for manufacturers making tapes, labels, medical devices, electronic components and more.

You’ve probably heard the term depth of field before, but depending on how familiar you are with photography you may not know exactly what it means. So what is depth of field? The quick definition is that depth of field determines how much of the field of view is in focus. This is helpful for ensuring that your subject is properly focused while blurring the background. A short depth of field places emphasis on an object by blurring the background and foreground, great for portraits and artistic shots. A long depth of field brings the foreground and background into focus; great for landscapes with multiple focuses. UV-curable hot melt adhesives are applied using standard roller- or slot-die coating machines followed by in-line UV curing. Manufacturers facing increasingly stringent environmental regulations find UV-curable PSAs are an excellent alternative to traditional solvent-based PSAs.

The diagrams below explain Depth of Field. In the first, a large depth of field is used. In this situation everything is in focus from 1 meter to 8 meters. In the second only everything between 3 and 4 meters is in focus.

The visual impact of this is quite striking, it makes the difference between a plain old picture of someone and a beautiful portrait shot. It’s also very useful if you don’t have an interesting or pretty background to place your subject in front of. By creating a very soft (out of focus) background, an otherwise ugly collection of lines or shapes can become a soft abstract image that puts emphasis on the sharply focused subject.

Initially this can be tricky but with practice it becomes second nature. The control of Depth of Field relies on using a combination of aperture, focal length, focus and the distance between the camera and the subject and the subject to the background.

Compared to solvent-based PSAs, UV cured PSAs exhibit better high-temperature stability and solvent resistance. UV PSAs are available for permanent, semi-permanent, and removable adhesion applications. In addition to tapes and labels, UV-curable PSAs fit specialty applications such as industrial tapes for sound dampening in the automotive industry – especially those demanding high-temperature stability and solvent resistance. UV PSAs deliver improved performance on PVC, elastomers and polyethylene.

Typically precision dispensing equipment and UV curing enables manufacturers to automate their component and part assembly processes which significantly increases production rates and quality. UV bonding finds wide use in the automotive industry, medical devices, electronics, aerospace, and many others that require fast, reliable and consistent curing.
