When you’re taking photos, the angles of view horizontally or laterally across the frame or vertically up and down the frame are probably the ones you’re most focused on. But it’s actually the diagonal measurement that comes up more often.

The Insta360 Link is a stellar webcam for web conferencing because of three key things: the 4K picture is crispy clear, the gimbal mount allows it to automatically track you around a room if you walk while you talk, and the Whiteboard mode is fantastic for presentations.

With a dedicated piece of hardware, webcams benefit greatly from larger sensors and better lenses, which help drastically improve image quality and performance in low light. But we get one question a lot here at Tom's Guide: which one should I buy? Well, after reviewing over a hundred over the past few years, we're in a good place to point you in the right direction based on your needs.

👍 Excellent value for money: And even better is that you get all of this capability for $149! It's a compact, lightweight camera you can take anywhere with you — sporting 4K HDR picture quality and plenty of smart capabilities — and it costs a lot less than you'd expect.

The short answer? Probably not. 4K webcams are generally a lot more expensive than their 1080p equivalents and unless you find yourself in scenarios where you regularly need to view yourself in 4K, you're better off saving your money and going with a lower resolution cam. Of course, if you're a content creator on YouTube or Twitch and regularly stream the best PS5 games that often output at 2160p their Quality modes, then a 4K cam could be worth considering.

This is the best webcam in Logitech's range — provided you've got the cash for it. Provided you're conscious of that little niggle with home lighting if you're in the UK, this is a slam dunk purchase.

👎 HDR limitations: If you want that extra boost in brightness and contrast that comes with HDR, you're limited to just 720p or 1080p. 4K does not support HDR.

With years of experience in Twitch streaming and taking many Zoom meetings during the pandemic, I know a lot about what makes a good webcam great. It's not just about the build quality and sensor specs, it's about what the company does with the hardware and how you can tune the picture to perfection.

Cheaper webcams will typically have just one microphone, which is fine for plenty of situations. However, if you work in a noisier environment, you'll want a webcam with two or more microphones, as well as software that can help isolate your voice from the sounds all around you. Another alternative — which will deliver even better audio — is to invest in one of the best microphones.

The practical angle of view of a lens varies based on the camera’s sensor size, so I’ve included some of the most common sensor sizes.

Knowing the angle of view gives you a baseline reference for how wide a perspective you can fit in the frame. In a practical sense, I find it useful for choosing which lens is right for the job.

A 4K webcam at $150 would have just been a bit of a joke not that long ago. But here we are in 2024, with incredible picture quality at a supremely good price. Pair that with in depth companion software to tweak that image, and you've got a winner.

This is the cam who finds themselves taking more work meetings in a day than actually doing work (I feel your pain). If you're giving plenty of presentations and need something that works around your remote working space, this is the one to get.

It's not something you notice in person, but on a 30 FPS webcam, you will see a flicker. If you're using lighting, make sure you grab some smoother LED light bars or something!

Elgato Facecam Pro (★★★★☆)Despite not being a brilliant low-light performer and lacking a mic, this 4K/60 fps cam still impressed during our testing thanks to the superb image quality it delivers and its top notch face tracking. The Facecam Pro's detailed companion software is also commendable.

There are several, quite frankly. As you can plainly see from the way the list above has been compiled, Logitech is on fire when it comes to consistently producing some of the very best webcams around. That doesn't mean you have to go the Logi route, though. Insta360, Anker and Dell all make excellent webcams that are well worth considering, too.

At $149, the Obsbot Meet 4K is a great choice with adaptability and a solid picture quality. With customization deep in its software, a magnetic attachment that makes it very versatile and FPS settings to alter it just right, you can get a lot done here.

These charts offer an alternative way of visualizing the calculated data above. It might be useful if you’re approaching it from the other direction and trying to find a lens that has a particular visual coverage that you’re after.

Logitech cameras generally have robust software options for customizing your shots, and the StreamCam can shoot in both landscape and portrait modes, which is worth considering if you’re shooting video for mobile consumption.

For enthusiasts and pros alike, the Elgato FaceCam MK.2 is a seriously impressive piece of kit for upgrading how you look on stream — fluid enough to keep up in real-time with 60 FPS gameplay with plenty of customization.

👎 No built-in microphone: As a streamer, I know you're going to be bringing your own microphone to the party anyway. But for those clutch moments where you need to take a quick call, there's no built-in mic on the FaceCam.

The same general principles apply for film, but instead of using the size of the sensor you’d use the size of the exposed film plane.

For 35mm film, that’s going to be functionally the same as using the full-frame option in the calculator above. I haven’t added other film sizes, but I might try to put together a separate calculator for that.

That’s because it’s the spec that lens manufacturers include in their spec sheets. So when you see that a lens has so-and-so degrees angle of view, it’s actually telling you it’s from one corner to the diagonally opposite corner. It’s not telling you the angle of view from side to side. In that respect, it’s a bit like the size spec that TV manufacturers use (i.e., a 55-inch TV is 55 inches from one corner to the diagonal corner, not from one side to the other side).

An easy example is when shooting architecture or landscapes. For those, you often might want to be able to fit quite a wide perspective, or large angle of view, in the frame.

The webcams above represent the cream of the crop in their respective categories, but they're far from the only snappers we've tested here at Tom's Guide. There are many quality cams we've reviewed that are still well worth considering, and below I'll quickly run you through some of my favorites that only just missed the cut against the best webcams on the market.
