My name is Rifath Islam. I am currently a 10th grader in MCSM and a current member of the Newspaper club. At the moment, I’m writing a bio for myself for the school’s newspaper website. However, as I look back, I can’t seem to remember anything else that I’ve done in the past few years. I think maybe the best accomplishment that I believe I’ve done is deciding to write. I’ve had a passion for it since the 6th grade and ever since then, all I’ve done is write, write and write. Joining Newspaper Club is a big step for me because it will allow me to indulge more in writing. As of right now, I’m not exactly a very experienced writer, but I’m hoping that as the year goes by, that my skills will improve especially within the Newspaper Club.

Yeritza Mejia is a junior at MCSM. She is a book and movie reviewer, and sometimes she contributes to the creative writing section of the newspaper. Her middle name is Esperanza and her last name is Reyes. Both last names come from her mother, but her middle name came from the mother of her father. She loves writing and her dream is to someday find one of her novels in a library or book store. One of her idols is the novelist Alexandra Adornetto who wrote her first novel at 14 years old! One of her hobbies is modeling. She studies at Mundo Hispano Modeling Academy of New York and will graduate in March 2014 from the advanced class after almost 2 years of training.

Hopefully I will improve my photography skills as well! I joined the Newspaper Club hoping to develop and express my love for writing through my submissions.

Just like you, I’m a casual human with talents and a name to define my identity: Mohammed Ajao. As a manga artist, video game designer, front-end developer, back-end developer, writer, poet, food critic, culinary rookie, website designer, animator, presenter, and otaku — my passions have led me to many experiences. One of them has been the Newspaper Club, a club where you write.

Hi! My name is Shumaya. This is my first year being part of the newspaper club, and it is definitely one of those choices I hoped to have made earlier. However, as of now I am enjoying every aspect of the club, and I hope to continue my participation in the upcoming year. When I write I mostly enjoy reflecting my personal life in short essays about cultural issues around the world, or science related articles. As stereotypical as it can sound, I joined this club because I genuinely have a passion for writing. I mostly receive my inspiration from reading the works of others. For example, one of my favorite writers is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. My personal favorite work by her is Americanah.

My name is Cristianel and I`m junior at MCSM. I try to help everyone as much as I can so no one would get left out from what they can learn. I am the photographer for MCSM RamPage and I have been taking pictures since January 2014. I have a lot more to learn in the art of photography but I keep getting better every day.

Carol Cooper co-advises the MCSM Newspaper Club with Assistant Principal Winchester. Miss Cooper has been a professional journalist since 1979. She is an Associate Member of the international writer’s organization PEN America, which runs the yearly World Voices Literary Festival in New York City. Living in Harlem, she has written critical and investigative essays for various publications, including: Rolling Stone, Latin New York, Essence Magazine, Elle, The New York Times, Newsday, and The Village Voice.

The newspaper for me has been like an outlet for my fear and stress of being in high school, and just the simple stress of “living.” This club has helped me meet students and teachers that I would not otherwise have met. My confidence has also improved, which has enabled me to take risks and join many programs outside of school. One of those programs (called “BeWell”) started off as a Columbia University internship in which I participated in training sessions on various health topics in order to disseminate health information from professionals to my peers at the Bridge UP after school program.

My name is Osasere Imade and I am a ninth grader at MCSM. I have lived in the Bronx since birth. I joined the MCSM newspaper club because I wanted to write. Writing is something that I personally love to do, especially writing a short story. I probably started writing short stories in fourth grade and so far it’s something I’ve stuck with. I hope I will continue to love writing when I am older.

Hey there! My name is Penda Smith and I am currently in the 11th Grade. I was born and raised in Manhattan. Poetry has always been a passionate way of life for me. It is one of the vital factors that have helped me overcome obstacles that hinder me from achieving my goals. I really hope you enjoy reading my poems as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Roberta Nin Feliz- Editor-in-Chief/Writer/FeministRoberta Nin Feliz has been a part of the newspaper since its beginning in 2013. She began as a reporter and worked her way up to co-editor and finally editor-in-chief. Her freshman and sophomore year she wrote for the teen magazine, YCteen. Her work for the Rampage garnered her a Newsie award for her Op-Ed essay “My History Matters, Too,” in which she describes her experience at a predominantly white summer program. She has also received 2 honorable mentions for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. A four year mentee in the writing and mentoring program, Girls Write Now, she has had her poetry published in the annual Girls Write Now anthology. Her writing explores social justice issues, feminism and sexism. Today, when she isn’t fulfilling her editorial duties for the Rampage, she serves on the editorial board of the feminist blog thefbomb.org and is a free-lance writer at Teen Voices for Women’s Enews. She hopes to major in biomedical engineering and minor in journalism when she gets to college.

My name is Jennet. I traveled from Europe ,to here in New York . I am a fiction writer. I usually write my stories about psychology, love and World War 2. The way Americans think is way different from mine. So I decided to share my ideas with you guys. I love to write because when I write, I feel like I am the most freest and happiest person. Classical music is my best friend while I am writing. I hope my stories will give you guys a great way of thinking  from my point of  view.

Hey! My name is Ruby Setara and I currently manage the “Humans of Manhattan Center” section of the Rampage. I am a part of Project Rousseau, a nonprofit program that offers services such as SAT prep or broadening horizons, and I’m a biologist in the making.

Eighteen year old Kiara Ventura is a young aspiring journalist who was raised in the Bronx and is currently a college bound freshman at NYU. In 2011, she wrote forYCteen magazine in which her article calledUsername:Hater was featured in the book ,Vicious. Her aim as a journalist is to tell stories that make people think about social issues, and then view the world differently once they are done reading. In the summer of 2012, she worked with the NYU Urban Journalism Workshop, where she won the “Best Enterprising Award” on her articles involving the LGBTQ community. With determination and passion, Kiara Ventura strived to start her school’s first online newspaper. Along with her big curly hair and a pen in hand, Kiara plans to climb up the slippery ladder of life’s challenges to ultimately reach everlasting success.

My name is Karla Davis. I am from the Dominican Republic, and I aspire to be a journalist and/or an author. I have been in the Newspaper Club since my freshman year at MCSM.

Outside of my school life you can most likely find me experimenting with new baking recipes, exploring hidden parts of the city, catching up with my TV shows, (Grey’s Anatomy and Narcos are some of my favorites), and, of course, reading. After high school, I plan to become active in changing the world we inhabit today. My ultimate goal is to start a campaign at school helping displaced young girls from underprivileged countries. As bold as this can sound, I am a huge activist for human rights and I hope to study medicine after high school.

I am fully devoted to speaking out against the injustice and the discrimination Muslims, women, girls, and people of color are facing today. I believe young people voicing opinions and fighting for the oppressed is significant because no unjust acts can be hidden or be ignored; because change happens. So it is our responsibility to bring these issues forward, and to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Additionally, I am part of the Advanced Science Research Program (ASR), expressing my interest in science. I plan to write scientific articles as well. ASR is a three-year research program allowing students to design a research topic, contact possible mentors, and begin experimental research in laboratories with extraordinary opportunities to work with scientists along the way. I am also in DDC (Double Discovery Center) in Upward Bound. This program helps you with your academic life and with college preparation as well.

Finally, I now also advise BeWell staff members about what health information and resources my fellow peers need in order to ensure the health and well being of our community. All in all, joining the Newspaper Club has truly been one of my greatest milestones and accomplishments.

I am a copy editor of MCSM RamPage and part of the graduating class of 2016. I edit for the RamPage because I love grammar, and I wanted something interesting to do with my time other than school work. As a member of the Advanced Science Research (ASR) Program, I am very interested in neuroscience, and I look forward to working with a mentor who shares the same fascination for the brain as I do.

That internship has since turned into a year-round program where I now assist in developing health content, including presentations, website articles, and a resource guide.

Hi guys! My name is Rafid Ahmed. I like playing video games and sports. I am a junior, and I’m still struggling with procrastination. I joined the club mainly for my resume, and to improve my writing skills. I will contribute to this club by interviewing lesser-known personalities within MCSM.
