Nearly 25% of jaguars are melanistic, which means that nearly 25% of jaguars may be born with a completely black coat. Often referred to as “black panthers”, these jaguars serve as the inspiration behind this Jaguar color variation, especially when viewed in comparison to the previous entry.

Jasper Black may look like a plain, no nonsense shade of black at first glance, but it actually has some relatively strong blue and red undertones running beneath the surface. As a result, this shade has a slightly purple tint to its overall appearance, although it’s still plenty dark enough to register as a “true” black shade.

Jaguar Spot, on the other hand, is clearly inspired by the dark brown, almost black color of the spots found on all jaguars. Even melanistic jaguars have these distinctive spots, although they’re virtually impossible to see when viewed on the dark coat of a true melanistic jaguar.

As mentioned above, Jonquil (CS) is inspired by the flowers of the jonquil bush. As compared to the previous entry, Jonquil (CS) is a little bit softer and lighter, with a lower saturation overall and slightly higher white values for an additional sense of brightness and cheerfulness throughout.

The Winnipeg Jets are a former Canadian hockey team who wore navy, blue, red, maroon, dark gray, and silver colors while on the ice. Jets Dark Gray, as the name might suggest, is a deep shade of cool gray with green and blue-gray undertones.

Jasper Red starts with a traditional Jasper base before dialing up the intensity. By dramatically increasing both the red and black values, Jasper Red presents a deep shade of dark red with some of the orange undertones erased in favor of the bold notes and intense visual impact of a dark maroon shade.

Juice Violet, on the other hand, clearly draws its inspiration from the dark purple and reddish hues of fresh-squeezed grape juice. The overall shade is a deep purple color with brighter red undertones that keep the strong black notes from completely overwhelming the relatively delicate shade.

In New Zealand, “jandal” is an old colloquial term for what you may know as “flip-flops”, “thongs”, “pluggers”, or “slippers”. No matter what you call them, these summertime shoes serve as the primary inspiration for the warm, sandy appearance of the color Jandal, which hearkens back to long days spent on the beach in the summer sun.

Jazzberry Jam (Ĉ) is very similar to the previous entry on this list, but the main difference lies in the origin—Jazzberry Jam is a traditional color, while Jazzberry Jam (Ĉ) is a crayon color! Beyond that, Jazzberry Jam (Ĉ) is slightly lighter and more pink than the previous entry, with a softer, lighter overall feeling.

As compared to Jade and Jade Glass, Jade Mussel Green looks much closer in shade to Jade Green or a regular dark green. While it still retains a bit of the light, glossy yellow undertones that set Jade apart, the overall appearance is a deep, bold, dark green shade.

Jewelled Yellow, on the other hand, is much closer to an antique gold shade than it is to what most of us probably picture when we think of the words “yellow” and “jewel” together. Jewelled Yellow is a dark yellow shade with strong green and gray undertones to lend a sense of history and weathering.

Once you understand how perspective distortion affects how you see an object, it allows you to select the appropriate lens for your subject. The simplest way is walk back until your subject looks in proportion and normal. For a horse I would want to be standing at least 10 metres back possibly a bit more. It will depend on if I’m shooting the whole horse or just it’s head. Now I am in position I think about what I want my image to look like in the frame. Do I want the horse to fill the frame? Do I want it with lots of surroundings? If I want it to fill the frame I am going to want to use something 70mm+. If I want to include scenery I’m going to rock a 24mm!

Take this image right (below) if you look carefully the horse is actually jumping the middle element of a combination, not the last. You can see poles from all three parts which are between 7-11m between one another. As this was shot at 400mm the gaps between them look smaller than they actually are. 99% of the time compression is not going to be an issue for you. It can make a horse/object look ‘stouter’ than it actually is. I would leave your 300mm+ lenses for sport images when you really need them. Aka when you can’t stand close enough to your subject to use a 70-200mm!

In Chinese folk religion, “joss sticks” are fragrant sandalwood or bamboo sticks that have been coated in incense to produce a sweet, heady aroma when burned. As a color, Joss captures some of the aged history and reverence that these incense sticks represent, and the end result is a soft, muted shade of brown with pale red undertones.

If you look at the above photo of the robin, the fence closest to the camera is big, furthest away it is small. All of it is exactly the same height but it looks smaller because it is further away. The closer you are to the object the more dramatic the distortion fall off will be from front to back.

From 1997 to 2019, the New York Jets wore Hunter Green instead of Gotham Green. Although very similar in appearance to the newer color, Jets Hunter Green is a slightly darker overall shade, which means that some of the green notes may not be as readily apparent as they are with Gotham Green.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that Jasper Green has a slightly metallic tint to its overall appearance, with some yellow and gray undertones rounding out the otherwise dark green shade.

Going back to the team’s current colors, Jazz Yellow looks more like an orange than it does a true yellow. With its bold red undertones and weathered overall appearance, Jazz Yellow still manages to bring the energy and excitement that any professional sports team needs to stand out on the court.

If we step away from cameras entirely and think about what we see with our own eyes instead it can be easier to understand. If you stood next to a very long wall, say the great wall of china, the bit of the wall you are next to will look utterly enormous, but a bit of wall a mile away will look tiny. We all know the wall is still enormous a mile away but because of our perspective to it, it looks small.

If you have to stand further away than the ‘ideal’ viewing point you will start seeing compression. This won’t be that noticeable unless using a much longer focal length. The compression effect basically makes two points seem closer together than they actually are. Again this is caused by your position in relation to the objects, not by the lens. Look at a mountain range from many many miles away and the mountain peaks will look like they are on top of each other. In reality they are potentially miles apart. All you do with a long zoom lens (300mm+) is make the effect more noticeable. The further away you are from something the closer two objects in front of one another will look, but it’s most obvious when you zoom in.

Jurassic is a deep, dark shade of green that veers almost into black, although it’s slightly lightened by a hint of brown. As a color, it draws inspiration from the untamed chaos and unchecked potential of the Jurassic period and all the creatures that dwelt therein.

As a planet, Jupiter has a swirled or marbled appearance thanks to its gaseous composition and thick atmosphere. As a color, however, Jupiter splits the difference between the various white, red, orange, and brown vapors in order to create a bold shade of red with some strong orange and brown undertones.

The last entry on our list, Just Right isn’t too dark or too pale—instead, it’s just right! This soft shade of brown has some sweet pink and orange undertones that give it a mild, almost antique appearance without pushing it too far into neon territory.

The last Jungle Green on this list, Jungle Green (Ĉ) is actually lighter than either of the previous two entries. With a much lower gray value than the other Jungle Greens, this shade takes on an almost pastel appearance for a sweetly blue-green finished product.

January Blue is a cool, solid shade that draws its inspiration from the grayish skies and heavy snows that are found in many parts of the world during the first month of the year. The color itself is a medium dark shade of blue with strong gray undertones and a muted overall hue.

You may be wondering what focal length do we see in? The answer is the eye sees at 22mm. BUT given to lots of clever science in reality it is closest to the effects of a 50mm lens. I would though rarely shoot a portrait at 50mm as it is not the most flattering! For humans for a head only portrait I would shoot at at least 70mm. For horses 100mm, but I often shoot at 200mm as I like the subtle effects of compression. At 200mm you will get more background blur/bokeh than you will at 70mm. You must weigh up which elements are most important to your artistic vision. The right/below image was shot at 200mm but with the angle etc does not show notable compression distortion.

The suggested ideal focal length where optical distortion is minimal is somewhere around 200mm but honestly is minimal from 50mm up.

The bigger the object the further back you will need to stand. For buildings you are likely to meet issues with vertical perspective distortion wherever you stand, unless miles away! On the most part unless a specialist architectural photographer it’s not a huge worry. If it is, you can use a tilt-shift lens which is designed to specifically counteract the effects of perspective distortion. Be warned though they are not cheap!

Jeffrey is another pale off-white shade, but while most off-white shades have a brown or red tint to their overall hue, Jeffrey has a pale green undertone instead. The end result is an extremely pale shade of greenish blue that still almost passes for a pure white at first glance.

Jordy Blue is a soft blue shade that serves as a variant on a typical Sky Blue color. As compared to other Sky Blue variants, Jordy Blue has a slightly higher gray value, which results in a deeper or even a slightly muted overall appearance, although it’s still got plenty of “warmer” bright blue notes.

While most of its red and blue undertones have been desaturated by the high gray values, Jubilee Grey still retains a hint of the characteristic warmth and excitement of a purple shade.

Native to Japan, Korea, China, and parts of Russia and Mongolia, the Japanese maple tree is cultivated around the world for its bold red foliage during the fall. As a color, Japanese Maple is clearly inspired by this autumnal appearance, and the end result is a bright shade of dark red with strong brown undertones.

The name “jacaranda” can be applied to nearly fifty different flowers, as it’s technically the name of a plant family instead of a single plant. Nevertheless, when most of us think of jacaranda flowers, we think of pale purple blossoms, which is why this deep, dark purple shade may come as a bit of a surprise!

The only panther species native to the Americas, the jaguar’s coat ranges in color from a pale yellow color to a deeper tan-orange shade. While the base color may be overlooked in favor of the iconic spots that set the jaguar apart, this base coat serves as the inspiration for the deep yellow-orange color of this particular shade.

When you look at all the colors that begin with the letter J, a few words are probably going to stand out. Jasper, Jungle, Jade, and Japanese are all names that crop up multiple times, and nature-themed names overall are pretty popular in the J color family. See if you can find the perfect color for your next graphic design or traditional artwork.

Jon is a dark shade of brown with strong black undertones. Although the color may scan as a pure black shade at first glance, it does have just enough of a red or orange undertone to brighten the overall tone and lift it back into the brown family of colors.

This second Jelly Bean variant, on the other hand, is much closer to what most of us probably imagine when we think of a bag of jelly beans. Jelly Bean 2 is a warm, bright shade of red-orange with enough white and yellow undertones to give it a softer, sweeter pink hue.

Jacksons Purple—no apostrophe needed—is actually a lot closer to a dark royal blue shade than it is to a true purple. However, there are some very slight red or magenta undertones running beneath the surface to keep it from presenting as a traditional blue shade instead of a very blue-violet purple.

If you don’t have a lens circa 70-200mm you will need to still stand in the same position then crop the resulting image out of camera. Do not stand closer to the object to compensate.

Jon Black, on the other hand, starts with a Jon base and does away with the yellow and brown undertones almost entirely to create a shade that’s almost entirely black. While it does still have some magenta and yellow notes beneath the surface, they’re almost completely swallowed up by the black overtones that make up the bulk of the appearance.

The flowers of the Viola japonica are typically a lot lighter than this dark purple shade would have you believe. However, as a color, Japanese Violet is more a dark variation on deep blue-purple Violet than it is a reference to the plant that shares its name.

People get confused and think the lens is creating the distortion which is inaccurate. If you choose a position and then take several photos at different focal lengths in the same position, you will see the same level of distortion in each photo. The photo to the right/below shows an image taken at 24mm with a crop window applied. That same image cropped is then below next to a 42mm image slightly cropped and a 70mm uncropped image. As you can see they are essentially identical. There is no change in distortion, because my distance between the horse did not change between them.

Image below left is a straight out of camera 24mm image showing barrel distortion and associated vignette. Below right (or second image if viewing on a mobile) shows the corrected image using only Lightroom corrections. Even at 24mm, as there are no straight lines to highlight it the barrel distortion is minimal.

While Juniper trees often feature bright green needles and warm brown trunks, the color Juniper draws its inspiration from the “berries” that grow among their needles. The female seed cones often take on this green-gray appearance with strong blue undertones running beneath the surface.

Firstly let’s discuss optical or lens distortion which is created due to the optics of the glass inside the lens. If you’ve not seen the glass inside they are not flat but instead have curves. The curve varies on each according to the lens focal width. Commonly wide angle lenses create barrel distortion and telephoto lens pincushion distortion. A small selection of mainly older, but some modern lenses create moustache distortion.

With all three types of optical distortion, if you were to imagine a grid of squares overlaid on the image you would see a different distortions pattern. In all though the centre vertical and horizontal lines will be straight.

Jay Blue is another bold shade of blue with a natural inspiration. While the feathers of the blue jays native to North America may not be exactly as bright as this dramatic royal blue shade, they still serve as the primary inspiration behind the color’s name and overall appearance.

The last jungle-themed color on this list, Jungle Wood is closer in appearance to Jungle Green (CS) than some of the other Jungle Green shades! As the name would imply, Jungle Wood is named after the massive trees that cast their shadows and help to create the unique ecosystem found in rain forests around the world.

Finally, Jasper Tan pulls a lot more from the Tan side of its name than it does from the Jasper side. Nevertheless, it still retains enough of the characteristic warm red-brown undertones to keep the overall shade from looking too pale or too washed out, and the end result is a pale brown shade with just the hint of red.

The first is perspective distortion and the second optical. Optical is broken into the sub categories of barrel, pin and moustache distortion.

Humans for a close up portrait look closest to reality at around 70mm, for horses aim a little longer at 100mm. No matter your subject up to 200mm you can’t go far wrong and overall you may get overall a more aesthetically pleasing image.

Barrel distortion is as it sounds, shaped like a barrel. Imagine the middle of each side being pulled out away from the centre. Pincushion is the opposite where the centre of each side is pushed in. Moustache is a combination of the two and the hardest to deal with as the distortion can be very irregular.

As mentioned above, blue is an extremely rare shade for jasper minerals, but purple is (very) slightly more common. The influence of a “true” jasper can be clearly seen in the strong red undertones that keep this shade from scanning as more of a blue-violet color.

But actually sometimes distortion is good and desirable so you don’t always have to correct it. The prime example of this is when using a fisheye lens. They are designed to push barrel distortion to the limits as a desired effect. You wouldn’t purposefully use a fisheye lens, then try and correct the distortion, it’s an artistic choice.

The phrase “jungle juice” usually refers to a wide range of mixed alcoholic beverages, but this shade takes more of a traditional approach. Jungle Juice is a bold yellow-green shade that clearly draws its inspiration more from the tropical rain forest than it does from an out of control party!

Not to be confused with the Winnipeg Jets, the New York Jets are a professional American football team whose colors are green and black—specifically, Stealth Black and Gotham Green. Gotham Green is a dark green shade with strong black undertones for a bold, no-nonsense visual impact and overall weight.

Finally, Jaguars Teal is the “accent color” used by the Jacksonville Jaguars to lend a bit of color to their uniforms. The shade is a deep Teal variant, which means that it straddles the line between green and blue while veering slightly more towards the blue side of the scale than most traditional Teal shades do.

As the name implies, Jumbo is a color that’s larger than life! At first glance, this shade may pass for a standard gray variant, but the subtle red and purple undertones that round out its edges give it a little bit of extra depth and help it exceed the boundaries of what would otherwise be a fairly simple color.

Jeepers Creepers is a cheerful nod to one of the most iconic video game “antagonists” currently in the public eye. Minecraft “creepers” are typically found in this distinctive shade of bright green with strong yellow undertones, even allowing for their pixelated distortion.

The last of our many sports team colors, Jets Silver is another Winnipeg Jets color. Although it may look like a simple medium gray color, Jets Silver has a slight yellow undertone in order to provide the glossy or metallic finish that takes this shade from a simple gray to a dazzling silver color.

Going back to the Canadian hockey team, Jets Navy was one of the many colors worn by the Winnipeg Jets during their professional career. As a color, Jets Navy is an extremely dark blue shade with some strong black undertones that make for an even more dramatic overall appearance.

As hinted above, juniper berries aren’t actual berries at all, but instead seed cones—like pine cones, but with unusually small scales and thick flesh. As a color, Juniper Berry echoes the soft, dark blue appearance of these “berries”, which are often used as a spice both in cooking and in fermenting various alcoholic beverages.

This second Jacaranda variant is just a little bit lighter than the first shade, with a slight green undertone running under the surface and brightening the overall shade. This color draws some of its inspiration from the twining vines that help support the jacaranda blooms.

Similarly, Jugendstil Pink is a traditional pink shade that’s been heavily muted or tempered with a strong gray undertone in order to create a dramatic, mysterious shade of dark pink. This color can be seen on some of the covers of the Jugendart journal that helped to popularize the art movement.

Jagged Ice is a cool, crisp shade of bright white with some cold blue undertones. It draws its inspiration from the sharp, steep icebergs that can be found drifting throughout the frigid waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean.

Jacarta is an outdated spelling for Jakarta, the largest city in Indonesia with a population of more than ten million and a booming downtown district. As a color, Jacarta is inspired by the vibrant potential and deep waters that lie off Jakarta’s coast, and the end result is a deep shade of blue with some jazzy purple undertones.

Jade Stone Green, on the other hand, is much closer in appearance to the traditional Jade color. Like most Jade variants, Jade Stone Green draws its primary inspiration from the stone of the same name, although Jade Stone Green has more of a blue undertone than the semiprecious material often displays in real life.

As mentioned above, jasper stones can come in any number of colors, although warmer shades are more common. Jasper Beige starts with a warm reddish brown base and mutes it out with higher black and gray values to create this stately, reserved shade of dark beige with subtle red and orange undertones.

You may know Jimmy Dean as a breakfast food brand or as the country music singer who founded said breakfast brand, but the color Jimmy Dean stands on its own. Jimmy Dean is a deep shade of dark blue with strong gray undertones to create a reserved, dramatic shade of dark bluish-gray.

Jet streams are fast-moving, narrow air currents in the earth’s atmosphere—and, as such, have no real color of their own. However, Jet Stream captures some of that fast-paced freedom and lightness with a pale shade of light blue. Soft yellow undertones help lend a sense of energy and movement throughout.

Japanese Withered Maple starts with the same base color as Japanese Maple, but the final shade is noticeably more brown than the original variant. As a result, Japanese Withered Maple looks a little bit more aged, weathered and, well, withered than the original Japanese Maple shade appears under the same lighting.

Jade Green, on the other hand, starts with the same Jade base and mutes out some of the blue tones for a color that’s a lot more obviously green. Jade Green is a medium dark green shade with only the slightest hint of blue to round out the overall color.

Jackpot is another relatively dark shade, but it’s significantly lighter than most of the entries we’ve seen so far on this list. A deep green shade with cooler blue undertones, Jackpot is a sturdy, dependable shade of green with just enough brightness to remain interesting.

Jive is a fast-paced dance style with strong swing and jazz inspirations that took its name from an early form of African-American vernacular from the 1930s. As a color, Jive captures some of the excitement and potential of the interwar period with its warm red notes and brighter orange undertones.
