Have you ever thought of making your own light show? When you’re ready to start building, DIYChristmas.org and the Vixen Lights documentation pages have nearly all of the information you need.

My boss is super into christmas light shows, he does a ton of it. He does shows for holidays throughout the year, not just christmas too. It’s pretty interesting to hear about, but I don’t think I have the money or patience to put together a show at my house.

Nothing gets you in the holiday spirit quite like some well done Christmas lights… am I right? And while typical light displays are nice, some enterprising home owners take their holiday decorations to the next level, thanks to the magic of technology.

While I could see the appeal and fun in building that, I have issues enough with the standard xmas decorations and hauling them out every year.

As someone who does a light show at both Halloween and Christmas, I will add there is a large and vibrant community of people out and about in your local area. I have been doing lights shows for almost 10 years now and it is great and rewarding fun, the programming portion is challenging (I’ve done it will several different systems, currently I like LOR as it is not that expensive, but has excellent support behind it during the busy season). We didn’t do a holiday show this year (have to take a year off now and then to recharge). As a hobby it could be worse, My neighbors and friends laugh at me when its 95 degrees out it July and I am sitting in my garage setting up and testing a new version of a hybrid tree, building a new prop for the year for sequencing a new song.

You’ve probably seen impressive videos of Christmas light shows backed up by rockin’ music that put you in a festive mood. Being a technical person, have you ever wondered what IT wizardry is involved behind extravagant displays like the one in the video below?

They are a lot of work, we start setting up the Christmas show in Mid October with a goal of being completed by the day after thanksgiving (we normally make it) and it takes almost everyone of those evenings after work to do it. But it is worth it the first time you have a little kid come up and see it in awe. My daughter and I go out every night during the season that we can and pass out candy canes and talk to the people that stop by. Great fun, we have all kinds of stories and have been on the local news and newspapers. I see if I can dig up some of the video’s we did a couple of years ago and post them (need to make new ones next year).

These are awesome. Here is a Metallica themed one for any metal heads complete with singing and headbanging snowmen, Santa the guitar shredder, Lars the elf, and of course some devil horns.

VDI offers up-converter modules for communication applications. The double sideband nature of the up-converter modules makes filtering necessary. VDI has designed filters to filter one sideband and preserve signal modulation. These filters offer low passband insertion loss and high out-of-band rejection. Custom filters may be available upon request. NRE (non-recurring engineering) fee may be required.

I have been wanting to set something like this up and absolutly do not want to spend the money of many of those “Professional” systems that costs $$$$$. Thanks!

Virginia Diodes, Inc. offers a broad range of millimeter-wave, band pass filters (BPFs). VDI full waveguide band BPFs are intended to be used to reject undesired out-of-band harmonics for VDI Signal Generator Extension Modules or other similar transmitter / source modules. Custom band pass filters may be available upon request. Contact [email protected] for more information.

The following video explains one method of bringing the light show of your dreams from your imagination out into the real world… for all of your neighbors to enjoy. In this clip, lighting enthusiast Bruce Williams explains that setting up a display is not terribly complicated as he walks us through all the gear he uses.

In closing, here’s an amazing Christmas display that’s a great example of what can come together when tech meets the holidays. Do you have other videos of impressive Christmas light shows you want to share?

Yeah… I could use that money to have an even better time with the amount of beer and liquor I could buy. Stunning, nonetheless!

If you’ve worked in IT, you’re already familiar with a lot of the technology you need. For example, the light sequencing in this example is powered by a PC utilizing Cat5 cable for connectivity between the computer and the 18 controller modules.
