I assume that all of the sources I’ve been reading are for lenses that are far simpler, and there is some optical wizardry that I’m not aware of that is governing things here. But my Google searching and ChatGPT conversations lead nowhere (it must have said “I apologize for not being clear enough” about a dozen times!

How can a 600mm DSLR lens project an image circle on say a Nikon sensor which has a Back Focal Distance of 44mm? Mirrorless is even less. I understand the back element isn’t the always at mounting point but very often it’s quite close. It’s certainly not 600mm away.

I have a Pretty Good™ understanding of focal length in terms of photography. Smaller number = wider field of view, larger number = narrower field of view. A given focal length projecting on a larger sensor = wider field of view (assuming it covers the sensor).
