Researchers in the Cavalleri group discover that photo-excited YBa2Cu3O6.48, in addition to featuring near zero resistance, also expels a static magnetic field from its interior. Their work has been published in Nature.
George Trenins, a postdoctoral researcher in the Lise Meitner research group Simulations from Ab Initio Approaches: Structure and Dynamics from Quantum Mechanics, has been selected for a Humboldt Research Fellowship.
The multiferroic NiI2 has greater magnetoelectric coupling than any known material of its kind, making it a prime candidate for technology advances, an international research team reports in Nature.
Professor Andrea Cavalleri, founding director of the MPSD, is to be honored with the 2024 EPS Europhysics Prize by the European Physical Society. The EPS is awarding the Prize in recognition of his “pioneering studies of photo-induced emergent phases of quantum materials: from enhanced superconductivity to the control of materials topology”.

The workshop in northern Spain, organised by the New York City Center on Non-Equilibrium Quantum Phenomena, provided the perfect forum to discuss some key questions for the quantum science era.
Researchers at the MPSD and Brookhaven National Laboratory used two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS) in a non-collinear geometry for the first time to isolate specific terahertz nonlinearities in the cuprate superconductor La1.83Sr0.17CuO4 by their emission direction. Their work has been published in Nature Physics.

Telecentric optical system is an optical design that where the principal ray in parallel to the optical axis. It eliminates distortion problems by collimating the light entering the lens and suitable for imaging 3D objects.
The MPSD has officially opened its new state-of-the-art research building in Hamburg. The President of the Max Planck Society, Professor Patrick Cramer, and the Second Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Science Senator Katharina Fegebank, were guests of honor at the opening ceremony.
A theory team from the MPSD collaborating with researchers in the United States and Switzerland has explained the key mechanism leading to terahertz amplification in the excitonic insulator candidate Ta2NiSe5. The work has been published in Nature Communications.

With the ERC Starting Grant, Chunyu Guo will investigate the novel effects of electronic correlations in the recently discovered AV3Sb5 family of Kagome superconductors using a high-precision framework that isolates the samples from external influences.
MPSD Director Philip Moll has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). In its citation, the Society highlights his achievements in the field of microstructured quantum matter, in particular the “elucidation of three-dimensional electronic transport on the micron-scale in quantum materials by creatively applying focused ion beams to precisely shape samples, thereby revealing previously inaccessible physics.“
The APS awards Fellowships to “such Members who have contributed to the advancement of physics by independent, original research or who have rendered some other special service to the cause of the sciences."
Moll established the Department for Microstructured Quantum Matter at the MPSD in 2021. Its researchers investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of a wide range of solids by producing micro- and nanostructures of these complex compound materials. State-of-the-art Focused Ion Beam technology permits crystalline circuits to be carved out of these particles with nanometric precision. Their electronic responses are then probed by charge transport experiments, at cryogenic temperatures close to absolute zero and in high magnetic fields up to 20 Tesla.
