Be mindful when you habitually use diffused lighting. A beautiful diffused light can also make your subject a flat, under-dramatic look. Which in many cases may not be the look you are looking for, but you are stuck with it thinking that it is best practice.
Post processing or editing is an excellent way to give you images a softer look. If, for example, you've photographed in direct light/sunlight you can reduce the highlights and lift the shadows as basics to remove the harshness. You could also bring down the contrast to smooth over the image. Playing with saturation and other aspects are just part of finding the perfect balance to your image!

When I was getting started with photography, experimenting (especially with light) greatly benefitted me and gave me the insight I needed to understand that photography really is about light at the end of the day, and how you can manipulate or work it to your advantage. From experimenting in-camera when it comes to lighting, to switching up your environment and using diffusers to see how that impacts light. Explore, experiment and most of all - enjoy getting to know the relationship between yourself, lighting and the end result that is your photo.

Combining complex curvatures on both lens surfaces results in variable base curves and flatter lenses. Camber technology provides labs with advanced custom lens curves bespoke to a patient’s visual needs. The technology provides an optimal visual experience for even the most complex presbyopic prescriptions.
The form of a lens refers to the physical curvature of the lens surfaces. The form and material of a lens significantly influence how it refracts light. Lenses can be convex, concave, or a combination of both, each form bending light differently. Convex lenses cause light rays to converge, focusing the light, while concave lenses cause light to diverge, spreading it out. The choice of material affects how much light slows down and must be considered when designing lenses to achieve the desired optical properties.
Astigmatic forms are lenses with at least one astigmatic surface—a surface that does not have a uniform curvature—and therefore lack rotational symmetry.

As I mostly shoot in my studio, during diffused light is an integral part of my shoot, especially in product photography. I always diffusion panels or scrim to diffuse the light. When it comes to diffusion panels, I often have to use double diffusion depending on the intensity of light I use.
I give myself personal projects to shoot. I am inspired by many things (music, art etc) and use these ideas to channel into my photography. I love working on my own projects as it allows me to take whatever creativity I have to a new level. The most important factor is light, practice with all kinds of light, see where the shadows are around your "hero", and where the reflections are. Backlight, or side lighting, darker mood or brighter mood - light really is one of the main factors for any kind of photography but more so in food photography. When I first got into food photography 15 years ago it took me a whole year to understand how natural light affects my images. Not only time of day but also time of year (Northern Hemisphere).

The best and easiest way for any portrait artist in my opinion is to wait for a cloudy day. The cloud serves perfectly as the soft box for the harsh sunlight and helps to create pictures with less and sometimes with no shadows. On any harsh light day, one can shoot in the open shade to avoid the contrasty light. The big windows can be used as a source of light to create great portraits. A small portable reflector can be used to further cut down the shadows depending on the amount of shadows you need on your subject.
Place a white sheet between your subject and a floodlight, we would get much softer shadows than if we simply hit the subject directly with the floodlight. While a softbox may produce soft shadows on a human when 5 ft away, it will likely produce sharp shadows on a car. In ideal soft lighting scenarios there’s a direct relationship between the size of your subject and the recommended size of your source light. As your subject gets bigger, so should the size of your light source if you want soft shadows. You can find a lot of diffusers that may help on Amazon.
These are lenses that consist of a spherical and cylindrical surface. Spherocylindrical lenses were the first lens form used to correct ocular astigmatism.
As light moves through a lens, it refracts or bends. Refraction allows the lens to either converge (focus) or diverge (diffuse) the light rays passing through it. The degree to which the light bends is determined by the lens's refractive index, which dictates how much the speed of light is reduced as it enters the lens material. This slowdown in speed is critical for manipulating light’s path, making it essential for designing optical lenses. Vision is corrected by focusing light precisely on the retina. Additionally, labs can manipulate how and where light converges or diverges by altering the shape and material of a lens.
To bounce the light from the on-camera flash, point the flashgun head towards the ceiling of the side walls as per the shot's requirement. A white ceiling or wall is desired to point the flashgun towards to avoid any colour cast and even spread of the light. Most flashguns have inbuilt bounce cards that can be utilized to fill the light on the subject. Suppose the ceiling has a beam or other structure that parts the top in more than one section. Then, keep the subject and the flashgun in the same section only. Otherwise, the beam or other elements may block the light from reaching the subject, and the shot will be underexposed.
In its simplest form, an optical lens focuses or disperses beams of light through refraction. The oldest optical lens discovered, the Nimrud lens, dates back to eighth-century Assyria. The Assyrians crafted this ancient lens from rock crystal with similarities to modern lenses. The discovery of the Nimrud lens as an early precursor to contemporary eyewear reveals the advanced technology of the Assyrians and the longstanding human endeavor to manipulate light and enhance vision through optical lenses. Fortunately for today's wearers, advancements in optical science have significantly broadened the scope and efficacy of lenses.
Another way to create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs is to use artificial diffusers, such as umbrellas, softboxes, reflectors, or diffuser panels. These tools can modify and diffuse the light from your flash, strobe, or other artificial light source, creating a more natural and pleasing light. To use artificial diffusers, you need to consider the size, shape, and distance of the diffuser, as well as the angle and position of the light source. For example, you can use a large and round diffuser, such as an umbrella or a softbox, close to your subject, and at a 45-degree angle from the camera.

Use diffusers like a photography umbrella, softbox, or a reflector with a diffuser panel to soften harsh sunlight or studio lights. These tools scatter and soften the light before it reaches your subject.

Aim to make photos from artificial lighting to look like they were taken with natural lighting, and you will be in on a good path to mastering photography.
The final technique for creating a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs is to experiment and practice with different combinations of the techniques mentioned above. Experimenting and practicing can help you discover new ways to create a diffused light effect, as well as improve your skills and confidence as a photographer. To experiment and practice, you need to have a curious and creative mindset, as well as a willingness to learn from your mistakes and feedback. For example, you can try different light sources, diffusers, angles, positions, settings, and effects, and compare the results and see what works best for you and your style.
Away from the center of the lens, oblique aberrations can reduce optical quality. Minimizing this impact can significantly enhance wearer satisfaction and comfort. Technologies, like IOT’s Digital Ray Path 2, minimize peripheral blur common to lenses such as progressive lenses by incorporating a wearer’s accommodative capacity, creating a high-definition visual experience for wearers.

Whenever you're using a bounce flash, you point it at a nearby surface, could be a wall or the ceiling, could also be the floor to bounce and diffuse light. It helps avoid harsh shadows.
When in the studio, set up your lightning equipment, your softboxes or your umbrellas. Decide on the direction and angle of your light, most photographers or art creators commonly used 45 degrees. You could make yours unique, Not more than 50 degrees and less that 43 degrees. This allows you create a pleasant lightning. Most importantly, consider the background you're using. The background should not contradict either the subject.
Within these categories, lens shapes combine in ways that affect light refraction, prompting various changes in vision. The optical industry mainly uses a meniscus lens, while other subcategories are found in equipment ranging from projectors to telescopes.

Lenses can also be classified according to their form and structure. Frequently used lens forms in ophthalmics consist of:
Diffused light is light that has been scattered or reflected by a medium, such as clouds, fog, water, or a translucent material. Diffused light reduces the contrast, shadows, and highlights in your scene, creating a more even and gentle illumination. Diffused light is often preferred for portraits, landscapes, and still life photography, as it can enhance the colors, textures, and details of your subject.
My favorite is the bounce flash technique which involves redirecting your flash off a surface like a wall or ceiling (white is the preferred color). This creates a soft, diffused light similar to natural window or skylight illumination, reducing harsh shadows and the red-eye effect.
Defined in ISO:18476:2017, a free form lens is a lens in which at least one free form surface is produced using free-form technology. This does not include conventional casting/molded front surface progressive-power surfaces.
I agree that ideally getting the shot right is the best way to insure you achieve the ideal photograph, but in reality that’s not always possible. Rather than setting the white balance in Photoshop, I’ve had success using the gray balance, and making sure there is a perfect gray element in the shot (even if it’s on the edge to be cropped out).
Optical lens manufacturers can create custom lenses that fix nuanced and specific visual issues by blending various technologies, shapes, functions, and forms. The most common types of lens designs for vision issues are:

Bouncing the flash off the white surface is always a great way to mimic the soft light created by a huge soft box. There are two important things to keep I mind though: first, one needs to use more power from the flash unit which means if you are using batteries you are draining them at a faster rate. Second, one might be using a bigger aperture to compensate the light which means less depth of field.
The science behind optical lenses determines how well they function. The design and technology they incorporate impact all aspects, from light refraction to visual focus to oblique aberrations.

Post-processing is an important factor for photography. If you are shooting in RAW format then to transfer it to a usable file format you have to use some kind of software so this first step is already "post-processing." I do think that every photographer regardless of amateur or professional post-processes and there is absolutely nothing wrong about that. Having said that, I would still advise getting as much "right" while behind the camera and shooting the images. Paying attention to detail, light, colour etc. is advisable while shooting rather than spending hours with post-processing software editing for hours. This way you are able to focus on editing the basic things and get back to the next shoot and next photo job!

A lot of photographers prefer shooting on overcast days as clouds act as natural diffusers. If you're in England that's basically most days! However, the diffused light effects can also be achieved in other conditions by moving the subject in a shaded area where the lighting is still pretty good. Blue hour (after golden hour or at dawn) are also excellent times to shoot when you want a natural diffuser!
Shoot in front of a window and use white sheer drapes to create the same effect. Or use white plastic bags or even paper towels taped to the window to create the same diffusion. Get creative with everyday subjects that anyone had on hand.

In the studio I use sheer curtains that are hanging above the windows. Other equipment would be diffusion panels or a cheap trick is also using rolls of thin tracing paper and sticking it to the window. It gives a wonderful soft light.
These lenses have a spherical front surface and an atoric back surface (varying curvatures across the lens) and are also designed to correct ocular astigmatism.
IOT integrates sophisticated methodologies into each lens to cater to a broad spectrum of visual needs, ensuring function and comfort in every lens design.
Post-processing is another technique that can help you create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs, using software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, or GIMP. Post-processing can allow you to fine-tune and enhance the light, color, contrast, and sharpness of your images, as well as apply filters and effects that can simulate a diffused light. To use post-processing, you need to have a good understanding of the tools and features of your software, as well as the principles of exposure, white balance, and color grading. For example, you can use the curves, levels, or exposure adjustments to brighten and soften your image, use the white balance and color balance adjustments to correct and warm up your image, and use the blur, glow, or soft focus effects to create a diffused light effect.

As individuals can have unique visual requirements, lens forms sometimes combine elements from different meniscus lens types to provide proper visual corrections.
Thanks to our Steady Methodology, the swim effect found in progressive lenses is reduced by controlling for unwanted cylinder power and changes to mean power in the periphery. The additional technology added to the lens design significantly reduces blurring around the edge.

Refraction drives optical lens technology, but it also collaborates with other factors, like shape and focal length, to manipulate light and images when a wearer looks through the lens.
Eyeglass lenses are classified as transmissive optical devices because they allow light to pass through. They come in various shapes with unique designs custom-layered onto each to allow precise light manipulation and magnification and to meet a wearer’s needs.
Personally, I prefer the artificial light more than the natural one because I get to control every aspect (e.g. brightness, distance, shape, etc.) The key to experimenting with artificial lights is to start with a near 100% dark environment. I personally practice in my garage studio, where it cuts almost all natural lights. (If your environment is too bright, increase your shutter speed to reduce the light, and then add your artificial light sources.) Once you have your room darkness set to your liking, then pick a subject and setup your light. I do portrait photography a lot, so I have a mannequin as a subject when I practice. Next, shoot -> adjust -> shoot -> adjust & repeat. Online tutorials are great, but nothing replaces practice!
In my experience as a beach sunset photographer I have come to appreciate the beach itself as a studio. The white sand of our beach is a huge reflector. But mostly the expanse of open sky and water really helps soften the background. You can start one hour before sunset and get an incredible array of effects by shooting in all directions. You have fun with your subjects moving them around. My favorite time is that magic moment when the sun is really low, and the light is shifting from gold to red. Stand with the sun at your back so your people are facing the sun. The light will be so soft they won’t need to squint or wear sunglasses. They will be bathed in light and your sky will be rich in color.
An optical lens is crafted from transparent materials such as glass or plastic and is designed to manipulate light through refraction. These lenses bend light to bring images into focus, produce magnification, enhance projection, and correct optical aberrations. While cameras and telescopes also use optical lenses, they primarily serve as the foundation for vision-correcting glasses.
One of the easiest ways to create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs is to use natural diffusers, such as clouds, fog, mist, or haze. These elements can filter and soften the sunlight, creating a more flattering and atmospheric light. To use natural diffusers, you need to pay attention to the weather, the time of day, and the direction of the light. For example, you can shoot during overcast days, early mornings, or late afternoons, when the sun is low and less intense. You can also position yourself and your subject in relation to the light source, such as facing away from the sun, or using a backlight or a side light.
There are so many modifiers available in the market which can be used to alter the intensity of light falling on the subject. The softboxes are great if one is shooting in the studio whereas umbrellas are great if someone is shooting outdoors as it is much faster to close them and move to the next location. For outdoor shoots, i usually prefer to work with umbrellas and collapsible reflectors, as, I then concentrate more on my subject and composition rather than get myself busy with the equipments.
The focal point is a specific spot along the optical axis where light rays converge after passing through the lens. This spot is crucial because it is where objects come into focus. The distance from the center of the lens to the focal point is known as the “focal length.” Lenses with a short focal length bend and focus light more sharply, giving them greater optical power. This makes them ideal for applications like reading glasses that require magnifying close objects but less suitable for applications that require significant magnification, like intense corrective lenses. Conversely, lenses with longer focal lengths bend light more gently and have lower optical power, making them better suited for observing distant objects, like when piloting planes or viewing faraway horizons in landscape photography.

I consider myself a natural light photographer, meaning, I have no control over the forecast! This means that I have to maneuver myself and move around in order to find the perfect lighting. Alternatively, if I'm photographing indoors, I can use sheer curtains or parchment/butter paper to give my images that soft diffused feel. You can also invest in artificial light and experiment with those and see what work for you.
The best way is practice and education. Understanding light is photography. Inverse Square Law . Basically soft diffused light is is the lights size relation to the subject. This can be achieved in many many way. Examples pull a light source like a strobe which is undiffued makes it larger to the source making softer light. The eaisest may is using a soft box or other diffuser that essentially spreads the light masking it larger. Much more involved . I do cover this on many of my education platforms for those who want to learn more
This is a generic term which technically encompasses all lenses that are not spherical, like progressives and free form lenses. Aspherical lenses are manufactured from spherical semi-finished blanks with one aspherical surface, usually in the form of a conicoid.
There are many styles of shooting where we can utilize natural diffusers. Clouds are the easiest way to use as a natural diffuser. They help to cut the harshness of the sunlight. Be it during the morning or evening golden hours; utilizing cloud cover will help your images have that 'POP' that we all are looking for. If its hard to setup times when the clouds are out in the sky, having a sheet of paper or a white sheet between your flash and the subject can help achieve similar results.
Soft, diffused light is a desirable effect for many photographers, as it can create a flattering, natural, and dreamy mood in your images. However, achieving this effect can be challenging, especially when you have to work with harsh, direct, or artificial light sources. In this article, we will explore some of the most effective techniques for creating a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs, using different tools and methods.
Spherotoric lenses consist of a front surface sphere and back surface torus and are the modern solution to correct ocular astigmatism.

These are the simplest form and most commonly used, with two spherical surfaces. Spherical lenses have rotational symmetry around the imaginary line that joins the center of each surface.
In my practice, to achieve a soft light in the portraits, I tend to use a bigger diffused light source relative to the subject. Bringing the light source closer to the subject adds more to the softness.

Lot of photographers specially the younger generation rely on post process. There is no doubt that these softwares are great help to us but at the same time as a photographer we should be getting the right shot at the first place. Imagine if a client ask you to look at the shot at the back of the screen, what would you like to explain to him. You cannot tell him that you will fix it later in the post process. As a photographer, our credibility is our best tool. During my portrait shoots, I try my best to establish my client's trust in me,as I then able to get the expression and emotions out of them.Once they have faith in me, they know that they will have great images after the session and participate in the shoot.
Commitment to innovation and customization in optical lens technology goes a long way. Tailoring lens designs specifically to the nuanced requirements of a wearer can result in lenses that exceed expectations in performance and quality. Achieving optimal visual clarity involves technologies that achieve the following results:
I found that chaging the camera system reframes your mindset quite fast. If you shoot digital, get a 35mm camera and put a few rolls of film through it. If you shoot full frame, get a medium or large format camera and change your perspective. The more you work within one format, especially without new imput and research, the less creative you will be. Because you get stuck in a rut and follow the same patterns. Also, forcing yourself to shoot a different style or subject type could push you out of your confort zone and into new creative areas.
In the art of product photography for advertising, creativity consistently delivers the most impactful outcomes. To achieve optimal lighting conditions and generate soft, flattering shadows, I utilize translucent papers, such as Savage Translucent or more economical alternatives like tracing paper. By strategically positioning and manipulating the light source, I endeavor to capture the essence of the product in a visually compelling manner.

With a meniscus lens, both sides of the lens have a curve, but the curves bend opposite each other. One side will bend outwards, and the other will bend inwards (as opposed to biconvex, where both sides bow out, and biconcave lenses, where both sides bend inward). When looking at the lens, a positive meniscus lens is thicker in the center and thinner at the edges. A negative lens is the opposite and thinner in the center of the lens while thicker at the surrounding edge. The difference comes from addressing varying spherical aberrations.
Bounce flash is a technique that involves bouncing the light from your flash off a reflective surface, such as a wall, a ceiling, or a reflector. Bounce flash can create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs, as it mimics the natural light from a window or a skylight. Bounce flash can also reduce the harsh shadows and red-eye effect that direct flash can cause. To use bounce flash, you need to adjust the angle and power of your flash, as well as the color and distance of the reflective surface. For example, you can tilt your flash upwards or sideways, use a low or medium power setting, and bounce the light off a white or neutral-colored surface.
