Auf Basis der Photographien und Zeichnungen erfolgen in Phase I Transliteration, Übersetzung und philologischer Kommentar der Ritualszenen, die in der Abschlußpublikation am Ende von Phase II in Umzeichnung gemeinsam mit einer ausführlichen inhaltlichen Analyse der Szenen und Inschriften in Buchform vorgelegt werden wird. Die photographische Dokumentation hingegen wird bereits am Ende der Phase I online und open access zugänglich gemacht werden.

Erstmals sollen das Barkensanktuar und die Axialkapelle ('Mesenit') des Horus-Tempels von Edfu mit ihren Wandreliefs einer ausführlichen und vergleichenden Untersuchung unterzogen werden, um eine Grundlage für zukünftige systematische Studien des gesamten Heiligtums, seiner Theologie und seines Kultbetriebs zu schaffen. Dafür bewilligt die DFG der Würzburger Ägyptologie gut 350.000 EUR für zunächst drei Jahre und schließlich für die Fortsetzung weitere fast 420.000 EUR.

Es wird sich den beiden Tempelräumen mit einem methodisch ganzheitlichen Ansatz und unter Einbeziehung aktueller Forschung zu ägyptischen Ritualen sowie Neueditionen von Papyri und Tempelinschriften widmen.

Demnach bestand zwischen den beiden Räumen eine enge, komplementäre Beziehung, für deren Kennzeichnung als Arbeitshypothese die Bezeichnungen "vorderes (oder offenes) Sanktuar" und "hinteres (oder geheimes) Sanktuar" vorgeschlagen werden.
