I was program co-chair for SIGIR 2017, the top search conference. At SIGIR 2017, I was identified as "Center of the SIGIR Universe," for being the author most central in the co-authorship graph in the 40 years of the ACM SIGIR conference.

I am a Partner Research Director and Deputy Lab Director at Microsoft Research in Redmond, leading the LEAP (Language, Learning, Audio, Privacy) research area (five research groups), the Central Engineering organization, and the Research Technology Engineering organization. Research on multi-agent systems (AutoGen), the creation of world and human action models for gameplay ideation (WHAM, Nature article), and the move from search engines toward action engines (Computer article) are examples of work that has happened recently in LEAP.

I am serving as Vice Chair of ACM SIGIR (until 2025) and as Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on the Web (second and final term runs until 2027).

We received the SIGIR 2007 Best Paper Award for our paper Studying the Use of Popular Destinations to Enhance Web Search Interaction.

I was founding chair of the series of ACM SIGIR Conferences on Human Information Interaction and Retrieval (CHIIR), pronounced "cheer." I am general co-chair of CHIIR 2026, to be held in Seattle in March 2026.
