Red light therapy mask. This fits over your entire face and has red LED lights on the inside, pointed toward your skin. It is designed to be worn for a short length of time several times a week. It's used as a treatment for acne, wrinkles, or other facial skin concerns.

A review of studies found that red light therapy may be a helpful short-term treatment for pain and morning stiffness for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. However, it doesn’t seem to be very helpful for other forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis.

As we have seen, it is possible to implement a model of absorption and scattering of light quite easily, but it is worth emphasizing that this method has two limitations. First, any specular reflection or refraction of light within the material, such as due to a mirror or lens, is not addressable, so only a reasonably homogeneous piece of material can be modeled. Next, the scattering within the medium is assumed to be isotropic. These limitations are counterweighted by the advantage of computational simplicity: Solving two sets of scalar equations for the collimated and scattered light intensity has very low computational cost. Furthermore, the source terms are easily combined with a thermal analysis to compute the rise in temperature. So, if you are modeling laser light interacting with a reasonably uniform sample of a semitransparent material and can assume isotropic scattering, then this approach is attractive because of its efficiency.

Red light therapy panel. This is a panel of red LED lights that you can mount on a wall or place on a table, either at a clinic or home. Panels range in size from small to large. Small panels are used for targeted areas such as your face, and large panels can target larger areas of your body.

Red light therapy is a noninvasive treatment that may help with several health conditions including wrinkles, acne, hair loss, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions that are still being investigated. You can do red light therapy at home using devices including masks and wands, but it may be more effective at a doctor’s office where the lights are more powerful. Though it can be expensive, it is generally considered to be safe.

A beam of collimated light incident upon a semitransparent medium can experience isotropic scattering, meaning that the light is redirected into all directions equally. This scattering occurs everywhere along the path of the beam, and the scattered light is itself immediately re-scattered, so this image presents a simplified view of the process.

If you don’t want to use an at-home red light device, you can get red light therapy at a variety of places, including a doctor’s office or a spa. If you want to see a doctor to do red light therapy, you will likely see a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in treating the skin. At a clinic or a spa, you may see an aesthetician — a licensed skin care professional.

People who take medications that increase their skin or eye sensitivity should not use red light therapy. People who have a history of skin cancer or eye disease should speak with their doctor before using red light therapy.

To understand the modeling approach, we will begin by assuming that we have a material with no scattering, only absorption. This situation is possible to model using the Heat Transfer Module’s Radiative Beam in Absorbing Media interface, which solves for the Beer–Lambert law within the material. When using this interface, it is assumed that the beam intensity is known at the illuminated boundary. That is, considering a beam of light of known power propagating through surrounding free space, the specified intensity is based on the fraction of the light that propagates into the material.

Even at a doctor’s office, however, there are some risks. One early-stage clinical trial found that at high levels, red LED lights such as those used in red light therapy can cause blistering and redness on the skin. Red light therapy may also cause eye damage in some cases, so it is best to wear protective goggles when using a red light therapy device.

The number of red light therapy treatments you need depends on what you are getting treatment for. But you will likely need ongoing sessions for weeks or even months.

The conversion of light to thermal energy is quantified by the term -\kappa G on the right-hand side, which leads to a decrease in radiant intensity. The source term, Q, leads to a volumetric increase in radiant intensity, and, in this situation, comes from the scattered fraction of the losses computed from the Radiative Beam in Absorbing Media interface; so, Q = \frac{\sigma_s}{\kappa_{tot}}Q_r.

A 2021 research review found that in all 10 studies included in the review, red light therapy had benefits for people with dementia. In one of the studies, five people with dementia who had regular light therapy on their heads and through their noses for 12 weeks had better memories, slept better, and were angry less often.

There is not a lot of research on the effects of red light therapy on pregnant people, but limited research suggests that it is safe. One study examined 380 pregnant women who had used laser light treatments during pregnancy and found that it was safe for both the parent and fetus.

In terms of evaluating the results, it can be particularly insightful to evaluate the integral of the thermal losses of the incident beam, the thermal losses of the scattered light, and the fraction of the incident beam and scattered light that leaves the modeling domain. The plots and table below show the distribution of these losses as well as the integrals. The distribution of losses can subsequently be used within a heat transfer analysis to compute the variation in temperature.

Red light therapy is also sometimes called low-level laser therapy, low-power laser therapy, low-power laser, or photobiomodulation.

Some providers use red light therapy as a weight loss treatment. This is often called body contouring, or body sculpting. Red light therapy may help reduce the circumference of your body in the area that was treated, but the effect will likely be temporary and not due to any real weight loss.

There is no evidence that red light therapy causes cancer. Red light therapy does not use ultraviolet rays, a form of radiation found in tanning booths and sunlight that can lead to skin cancer.

Research on the benefits of red light therapy is ongoing. While more research needs to be done, there is some evidence that it may be useful for several health and beauty concerns.

When a ray of collimated light, such as from a laser, is incident upon a semitransparent medium, it can experience both absorption and scattering. This means that the incident light is both converted to thermal energy and redirected. Under certain assumptions, these phenomena can be modeled using a diffusive approximation in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. This modeling approach has applications in laser heating of living tissue as well as materials processing. Let’s learn more!

To implement such a model within COMSOL Multiphysics®, we can use a combination of the Radiative Beam in Absorbing Media interface and the Radiation in Absorbing-Scattering Media interface. The former interface only needs be solved for in a subdomain surrounding the path of the incident beam. Within the Radiative Beam in Absorbing Media interface, the absorption coefficient needs to be modified to include both the scattering and the absorption coefficients. When evaluating the results, it is thus important to reduce the absorbed heat by the absorbed fraction.

In red light therapy, you expose your skin to a lamp, device, or laser with a red light. It uses an LED (light-emitting diode) that emits the correct spectrum of light. Red LED light travels deeper into the skin than blue LED light, which is sometimes used to treat skin surface conditions such as acne. Red light therapy appears to be mostly safe when used correctly, especially in the short term. Many forms of red light therapy are more effective when done at a doctor’s office rather than at home. That's because doctors can use stronger lights.

Research shows red light therapy may smooth your skin and help with wrinkles. Researchers think it does this by stimulating collagen production, which helps improve skin elasticity. Research shows it also helps improve signs of sun damage.

A review of multiple studies found that red light therapy can be an effective treatment for androgenic alopecia, a genetic disorder that causes hair loss. Another review of 11 studies found similar promising results. In some studies, hair thickness improved as well as hair growth.

The review noted that many of these studies were small and lacked controls and that larger trials need to be done before any benefits can be confirmed.

There are many different types of red light therapy devices, some of which can be used at home. But home devices are usually less powerful than those used in clinics and may be less effective or take longer to work. Red light therapy devices include:

If you decide to use a red light therapy device at home, note that it may not be as powerful or effective as devices used by doctors or other professionals. When choosing an at-home device to purchase, you can check whether it has been cleared by the US FDA, which means that it is safe and equivalent to other devices already on the market. When using a red light therapy device at home, make sure to use proper eye protection and follow all directions on the device.

Along with the governing equation, we also need a set of boundary conditions for the material when solving for the scattered light. Given that the incident laser light can enter the domain, it is also reasonable to assume that the scattered light can leave the modeling domain. The Semitransparent Surface feature is appropriate for this situation, and lets us enter an emissivity, \epsilon, and a diffuse transmissivity, \tau_d. These two quantities must be less than or equal to one and define a diffuse reflectivity \rho_d = 1-\epsilon – \tau_d. Scattered light incident upon this boundary will entirely pass through if \tau_d = 1, and, if \tau_d < 1, then the light will be partially diffusely reflected back into the domain.

Research shows that red light therapy may be useful for relieving some types of pain, particularly pain due to inflammation (irritation and swelling of body tissues). A review of 11 studies looking at the effect of red light therapy on pain found mostly positive results, though the authors said that more studies are needed. In another small study, people with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) had less pain, clicking, and jaw tenderness after red light therapy.

There can be several different spatially overlapping incident beams, and one equation, indexed by i, is solved for each. The term \kappa is the absorption coefficient, which quantifies how these beams are absorbed. The absorbed energy is the sum from all incident beams: Q_r = \kappa \sum_i I_i. The assumption of this interface is that all absorbed light energy is converted to heat energy, but we can easily modify the interface settings to also account for scattering.

Red light therapy uses very low levels of heat and doesn’t hurt or burn the skin. Unlike the light used in tanning booths, it doesn’t expose your skin to damaging UV rays.

A semitransparent medium is any material through which a ray of light can travel a significant distance before being extinguished due to a combination of absorbing and scattering. Absorption is the mechanism by which the light energy is converted into thermal energy, leading to a rise in temperature. Scattering is the mechanism by which the light is redirected into other directions. The scattering of light can take many forms: At one extreme is the specular reflection and refraction that occurs at the surfaces of mirrors and dielectrics, while at the other extreme, there can be nearly isotropic scattering, as is observed within a turbid medium such as very muddy water, where the turbidity is due to small suspended particles that are randomly shaped and oriented.

Many studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of long-lasting health problems and found some proof that saunas may help.

Red light therapy is a treatment that may help skin, muscle tissue, and other parts of your body heal. It uses low levels of red light to target your skin and cells. It is thought to work by increasing the production of mitochondria, your cells' energy sources. This may improve cell function and repair.

Handling a hot bulb requires heat-resistant gloves and eye protection, especially since Mercury and Xenon bulbs can explode when hot.

Red light therapy wand. These are handheld devices that have red LED lights at one end. You use them by moving the wand over your skin in the areas that you want to treat. They are used to treat very small areas, such as the back of the hands, one knee, or a particular spot on the face.

It should be noted that essentially all real materials exhibit some degree of anisotropic scattering, meaning that light is preferentially redirected into certain directions. However, in some applications, the scattering can be approximated as isotropic, and that is the case we will address here. We will consider a ray of collimated light, a laser beam, incident upon a material, where an isotropic scattering coefficient and isotropic absorption coefficient quantify the change in the light intensity.

The cost of this therapy can vary greatly depending on whether you are using a device at home or you are getting treatment in a clinic. But in general, red light therapy isn’t cheap — treatments can cost $80 a session or more.

We now need to compute how the scattered fraction of this light propagates through the medium, keeping in mind that it will be both absorbed and re-scattered everywhere. This is where we turn to the Heat Transfer Module’s Radiation in Absorbing-Scattering Media interface, which offers the P1 approximation that solves the equation:
