I give myself personal projects to shoot. I am inspired by many things (music, art etc) and use these ideas to channel into my photography. I love working on my own projects as it allows me to take whatever creativity I have to a new level. The most important factor is light, practice with all kinds of light, see where the shadows are around your "hero", and where the reflections are. Backlight, or side lighting, darker mood or brighter mood - light really is one of the main factors for any kind of photography but more so in food photography. When I first got into food photography 15 years ago it took me a whole year to understand how natural light affects my images. Not only time of day but also time of year (Northern Hemisphere).

Personally, I prefer the artificial light more than the natural one because I get to control every aspect (e.g. brightness, distance, shape, etc.) The key to experimenting with artificial lights is to start with a near 100% dark environment. I personally practice in my garage studio, where it cuts almost all natural lights. (If your environment is too bright, increase your shutter speed to reduce the light, and then add your artificial light sources.) Once you have your room darkness set to your liking, then pick a subject and setup your light. I do portrait photography a lot, so I have a mannequin as a subject when I practice. Next, shoot -> adjust -> shoot -> adjust & repeat. Online tutorials are great, but nothing replaces practice!

A lot of photographers prefer shooting on overcast days as clouds act as natural diffusers. If you're in England that's basically most days! However, the diffused light effects can also be achieved in other conditions by moving the subject in a shaded area where the lighting is still pretty good. Blue hour (after golden hour or at dawn) are also excellent times to shoot when you want a natural diffuser!
There are many styles of shooting where we can utilize natural diffusers. Clouds are the easiest way to use as a natural diffuser. They help to cut the harshness of the sunlight. Be it during the morning or evening golden hours; utilizing cloud cover will help your images have that 'POP' that we all are looking for. If its hard to setup times when the clouds are out in the sky, having a sheet of paper or a white sheet between your flash and the subject can help achieve similar results.

Lot of photographers specially the younger generation rely on post process. There is no doubt that these softwares are great help to us but at the same time as a photographer we should be getting the right shot at the first place. Imagine if a client ask you to look at the shot at the back of the screen, what would you like to explain to him. You cannot tell him that you will fix it later in the post process. As a photographer, our credibility is our best tool. During my portrait shoots, I try my best to establish my client's trust in me,as I then able to get the expression and emotions out of them.Once they have faith in me, they know that they will have great images after the session and participate in the shoot.
Aim to make photos from artificial lighting to look like they were taken with natural lighting, and you will be in on a good path to mastering photography.

Be mindful when you habitually use diffused lighting. A beautiful diffused light can also make your subject a flat, under-dramatic look. Which in many cases may not be the look you are looking for, but you are stuck with it thinking that it is best practice.

I've tried 'em all — and it depends on whether you're shooting in a studio, on location indoors, or outdoors. Oddly enough, one of the best diffusers is a foggy morning! But one can't just order up the weather, so diffused flash or a ring flash is good for most indoor situations, or outdoors if it's a dark day or you need to break up too bright sunlight.

My favorite is the bounce flash technique which involves redirecting your flash off a surface like a wall or ceiling (white is the preferred color). This creates a soft, diffused light similar to natural window or skylight illumination, reducing harsh shadows and the red-eye effect.
Patsy’s favorite things about living in Colorado are the open outdoor spaces and wonderful weather. She makes an effort to visit the mountains each year to reconnect with nature and take walks in the park to relax. Patsy is also always a fan of a fresh cup of ice cream!
Bounce flash is a technique that involves bouncing the light from your flash off a reflective surface, such as a wall, a ceiling, or a reflector. Bounce flash can create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs, as it mimics the natural light from a window or a skylight. Bounce flash can also reduce the harsh shadows and red-eye effect that direct flash can cause. To use bounce flash, you need to adjust the angle and power of your flash, as well as the color and distance of the reflective surface. For example, you can tilt your flash upwards or sideways, use a low or medium power setting, and bounce the light off a white or neutral-colored surface.

The best and easiest way for any portrait artist in my opinion is to wait for a cloudy day. The cloud serves perfectly as the soft box for the harsh sunlight and helps to create pictures with less and sometimes with no shadows. On any harsh light day, one can shoot in the open shade to avoid the contrasty light. The big windows can be used as a source of light to create great portraits. A small portable reflector can be used to further cut down the shadows depending on the amount of shadows you need on your subject.
Genevieve comes to Illuminate with a degree in Business Administration and a career in personal finance where she completed her Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification. She also has experience in office management, managing finance, accounting, and human resources duties.
I found that chaging the camera system reframes your mindset quite fast. If you shoot digital, get a 35mm camera and put a few rolls of film through it. If you shoot full frame, get a medium or large format camera and change your perspective. The more you work within one format, especially without new imput and research, the less creative you will be. Because you get stuck in a rut and follow the same patterns. Also, forcing yourself to shoot a different style or subject type could push you out of your confort zone and into new creative areas.
Place a white sheet between your subject and a floodlight, we would get much softer shadows than if we simply hit the subject directly with the floodlight. While a softbox may produce soft shadows on a human when 5 ft away, it will likely produce sharp shadows on a car. In ideal soft lighting scenarios there’s a direct relationship between the size of your subject and the recommended size of your source light. As your subject gets bigger, so should the size of your light source if you want soft shadows. You can find a lot of diffusers that may help on Amazon.
Dawn (she/her/hers) joined the Illuminate team in March of 2022 and is currently the Director of Early Childhood Initiatives. In her role, Dawn provides backbone support to ensure the successful implementation of Colorado Department of Early Childhood's (CDEC) Colorado Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems: Health Integration Prenatal to Three (CO-ECCS) Project as well as supporting the Colorado Partnership for Thriving Families (CPTF).
Bouncing the flash off the white surface is always a great way to mimic the soft light created by a huge soft box. There are two important things to keep I mind though: first, one needs to use more power from the flash unit which means if you are using batteries you are draining them at a faster rate. Second, one might be using a bigger aperture to compensate the light which means less depth of field.

The final technique for creating a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs is to experiment and practice with different combinations of the techniques mentioned above. Experimenting and practicing can help you discover new ways to create a diffused light effect, as well as improve your skills and confidence as a photographer. To experiment and practice, you need to have a curious and creative mindset, as well as a willingness to learn from your mistakes and feedback. For example, you can try different light sources, diffusers, angles, positions, settings, and effects, and compare the results and see what works best for you and your style.

Post-processing is an important factor for photography. If you are shooting in RAW format then to transfer it to a usable file format you have to use some kind of software so this first step is already "post-processing." I do think that every photographer regardless of amateur or professional post-processes and there is absolutely nothing wrong about that. Having said that, I would still advise getting as much "right" while behind the camera and shooting the images. Paying attention to detail, light, colour etc. is advisable while shooting rather than spending hours with post-processing software editing for hours. This way you are able to focus on editing the basic things and get back to the next shoot and next photo job!

As I mostly shoot in my studio, during diffused light is an integral part of my shoot, especially in product photography. I always diffusion panels or scrim to diffuse the light. When it comes to diffusion panels, I often have to use double diffusion depending on the intensity of light I use.

Diffused light is light that has been scattered or reflected by a medium, such as clouds, fog, water, or a translucent material. Diffused light reduces the contrast, shadows, and highlights in your scene, creating a more even and gentle illumination. Diffused light is often preferred for portraits, landscapes, and still life photography, as it can enhance the colors, textures, and details of your subject.

One of the easiest ways to create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs is to use natural diffusers, such as clouds, fog, mist, or haze. These elements can filter and soften the sunlight, creating a more flattering and atmospheric light. To use natural diffusers, you need to pay attention to the weather, the time of day, and the direction of the light. For example, you can shoot during overcast days, early mornings, or late afternoons, when the sun is low and less intense. You can also position yourself and your subject in relation to the light source, such as facing away from the sun, or using a backlight or a side light.
I agree that ideally getting the shot right is the best way to insure you achieve the ideal photograph, but in reality that’s not always possible. Rather than setting the white balance in Photoshop, I’ve had success using the gray balance, and making sure there is a perfect gray element in the shot (even if it’s on the edge to be cropped out).
Post-processing is another technique that can help you create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs, using software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, or GIMP. Post-processing can allow you to fine-tune and enhance the light, color, contrast, and sharpness of your images, as well as apply filters and effects that can simulate a diffused light. To use post-processing, you need to have a good understanding of the tools and features of your software, as well as the principles of exposure, white balance, and color grading. For example, you can use the curves, levels, or exposure adjustments to brighten and soften your image, use the white balance and color balance adjustments to correct and warm up your image, and use the blur, glow, or soft focus effects to create a diffused light effect.

To bounce the light from the on-camera flash, point the flashgun head towards the ceiling of the side walls as per the shot's requirement. A white ceiling or wall is desired to point the flashgun towards to avoid any colour cast and even spread of the light. Most flashguns have inbuilt bounce cards that can be utilized to fill the light on the subject. Suppose the ceiling has a beam or other structure that parts the top in more than one section. Then, keep the subject and the flashgun in the same section only. Otherwise, the beam or other elements may block the light from reaching the subject, and the shot will be underexposed.

Another way to create a soft, diffused light effect in your photographs is to use artificial diffusers, such as umbrellas, softboxes, reflectors, or diffuser panels. These tools can modify and diffuse the light from your flash, strobe, or other artificial light source, creating a more natural and pleasing light. To use artificial diffusers, you need to consider the size, shape, and distance of the diffuser, as well as the angle and position of the light source. For example, you can use a large and round diffuser, such as an umbrella or a softbox, close to your subject, and at a 45-degree angle from the camera.

The best way is practice and education. Understanding light is photography. Inverse Square Law . Basically soft diffused light is is the lights size relation to the subject. This can be achieved in many many way. Examples pull a light source like a strobe which is undiffued makes it larger to the source making softer light. The eaisest may is using a soft box or other diffuser that essentially spreads the light masking it larger. Much more involved . I do cover this on many of my education platforms for those who want to learn more

I consider myself a natural light photographer, meaning, I have no control over the forecast! This means that I have to maneuver myself and move around in order to find the perfect lighting. Alternatively, if I'm photographing indoors, I can use sheer curtains or parchment/butter paper to give my images that soft diffused feel. You can also invest in artificial light and experiment with those and see what work for you.

When in the studio, set up your lightning equipment, your softboxes or your umbrellas. Decide on the direction and angle of your light, most photographers or art creators commonly used 45 degrees. Post processing or editing is an excellent way to give you images a softer look. If, for example, you've photographed in direct light/sunlight you can reduce the highlights and lift the shadows as basics to remove the harshness.
