Kitchen island and breakfast bar lights often take the form of ceiling pendants as there is clear space above the work surface to mount them, and plenty of space to hang them lower than you would normally, it's often possible to mount them just above eye level, so you should carefully consider the look of your over island lights. Fortunately we have collated a huge range of these to ensure you have ample to chose from.
Kitchen islands provide practical storage for pots, saucepans, cookery books, and even wine bottles, but what about lighting them? This is an area that often requires its own type of lighting, owing to its location and lack of units above them, as is often the case with the other work surfaces in the kitchen.
The path of the light is directed in such a way that it can pass through the outer edge of the condenser at a wide-angle and strike the sample at an oblique angle. Only the light scattered by the sample reaches the objective lens for visualization. All other light that passes through the specimen will miss the objective, thus the specimen is brightly illuminated on a dark background.Uses of Dark-Field MicroscopyDark-field microscopes are used in the microbiology laboratory for the following purposes;Visualization of spirochetes such as Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Borrelia burgdorferi (lyme borreliosis) and Leptospira interrogans (leptospirosis) in clinical samples.Borrelia in dark field microscopy(Image courtesy S Bhimji)Spirochetes can not be seen by light microscopy because of their thin dimensions.Observation of microbial motility; tufts of bacterial flagella can often be seen in unstained cells by dark-field or phase-contrast microscopyObservation of internal structure in larger eukaryotic microorganisms such as algae, yeasts, etc.Advantages of Dark-Field MicroscopyResolution by dark-field microscopy is somewhat better than bright-field microscopy. It improves image contrast without the use of stain, and thus do not kill cells.Direct detection of non-culturable bacteria present in patient samples. No sample preparation is required. It requires no special setup, even a light microscope can be converted to dark field.Limitations of Dark-Field Microscopy Necessity to examine wet, moist specimens containing living organisms very quickly, because visualization of the moving bacteria is essential to detection. The sample must be very strongly illuminated, which can cause damage to the sample.Besides the sample, dust particles also scatter the light and appear bright.Sample material needs to be spread thinly, dense preparations can grossly affect the contrast and accuracy of the dark field’s image.References and further readings Madigan Michael T, Bender, Kelly S, Buckley, Daniel H, Sattley, W. While pendant lights are often centred over a kitchen island or breakfast bar, this isn’t a necessity. Especially on longer islands or bars, you may need multiple pendants to provide ample light. Similarly, you may prefer to hang pendant lights toward the front or back of the island to complement other interior design choices.
Choose from ceiling pendants in stunning, modern chrome finishes, as well as unique designs in a range of materials and colour finishes, such as our rattan and bamboo pendants. We even stock a range of pendant bars that make an eye-catching addition to any kitchen.

Dark-field microscopy is a technique that can be used for the observation of living, unstained cells and microorganisms. In this microscopy, the specimen is brightly illuminated while the background is dark. It is one type of light microscope, others being bright-field, phase-contrast, differential interface contrast, and fluorescence.
Use it to refer to a collection of lights in any context. For example: "As we drove past the amusement park, I gazed in awe at the dazzling array of lights."

As a general rule, there should be a minimum of 30” between the bottom of the pendant light and the kitchen island surface. This allows for plenty of room, so the pendant doesn’t interfere when laying the table or sitting with friends. However, you may want to leave more room – especially if the light is particularly bright or powerful.
Choose from light bars that make the perfect centrepiece for illuminating your breakfast bar, or single pendants that can be dotted across a kitchen island – or placed at either end – to create the perfect ambient or mood lighting for every occasion.

To find the perfect light pendant for your kitchen island, first, consider how long the surface is. Do you need a single pendant or bar to place in the centre of the island or multiple pendants to cover the full length? Next, consider how much light you need. Will a single pendant provide ample ambient light or will you need a pendant light bar with multiple bulbs for added illumination?
Dark-field microscopy uses a light microscope with an extra opaque disc underneath the condenser lens, or a special condenser having a central blacked-out area, due to which the light coming from the source cannot directly enter into the objective.
