A good backlight has even illumination across the entire film window, covers the colour spectrum evenly, and does not add a colour cast to the image. There are inexpensive ones from Amazon and well-designed ones from companies such as Negative Supply.

While testing different lighting arrangements I only took images of the light itself and not of any slides, but the pair of images below are a reasonably fair emulation of what can happen with a poor backlight. I used the light photo of an ArtoGraph LED panel, converted to grayscale, and multiplied it against the photo on the left to create the “badly illuminated scan”.
