Yeah that seems to be the consensus. I haven't done ALL the research other than looking at length and wingspan specs. One of the guys in my local club is a member of the Phantom Society and said what an undertaking it is. He offered to sell me a J kit out of his stash so I'll probably take him up on that.

I just aquired the Revell 1/72 F4-F Phantom II and was wanting to find out the best way to convert it to a F-4J. Is there a way? Looks like I would have to at least saw off the cannon housing under the nose. But beyond that I'm at a loss as to what would be involved.

Hmmmm, very odd ball conversion. Going that route is so hard it makes no sense. You'd need a new cockpit, new slotted wings, but unslotted stabs, new wheels, completely new nose (it's also shorter) new engine exhaust, different inner pylons, different tail... And the list goes on and on...
