For our purposes, double parking will be defined as parallel parking in a way that restricts the movement of currently parked vehicles and those attempting to use the roadway or bicycle lane. It is most common in urban environments where free parking spaces are scarce, and the value trade-off between the double parking fine and the cost of paid parking is about equal. For this study, we will primarily focus on urban areas in the U.S., but it's also common in South Korea. To address this issue, it is common for vehicles to have their owners' telephone numbers on the windshield for people to call when their cars are blocked in. In the U.S., we don't have that culture, so cars just get stuck.

Double parking cannot necessarily be blamed on one party (in most cases) because it is a symptom of a larger issue in our urban environments, which is the misallocation of parking spaces. Cities have empty parking spaces; the problem is that said parking is not always in a convenient location for users. However, users who double park are the primary cause of the issue.

Welcome to issue 14 of Mobility Frontier! This week’s edition examines double parking and why it's such a big issue, particularly in urban areas. When it comes to double parking, there are two definitions: one for parallel parking and one for attended car parks and garages. In attended car parks, double parking is not an issue because there are valet drivers and support staff on hand. It’s beneficial as it allows them to maximize storage space and hold more cars. However, the double parking we are concerned with is parallel parking.
Brett Martin's underground drainage products were used for Belfast's 800,000 sq ft Victoria Square complex which saw the largest construction excavation ever carried out in NI.
Our industry compliant drainage solutions have been tried, tested and trusted in construction projects across the UK and Ireland.

This is a bit more complex because there are people who double park out of necessity and those who do it because they simply don't care. One of the largest offenders in the latter category is delivery services such as UPS, FedEx, and Amazon Prime, who actively tell their drivers that it's okay to double park because the company has a special fund for that purpose. This should not be the case. One option to combat this is to impose fines that increase depending on the frequency for regular vehicles and to have special fines for designated delivery vehicles. The goal is not to penalize the average driver, so starting the fines at a low amount is crucial to avoid being too harsh. However, when multiple infractions have been committed, a higher fine serves as a penalty. The special penalty for delivery vehicles is because they are among the biggest offenders and have a history of not caring.
Thank you for reading this week's edition of Mobility Frontier. Double parking is a problem in our cities, and solving it is important to ensure that those with vehicles and bikes in urban environments are free to use them. Next week, we will be discussing Paid Parking and how it impacts traffic patterns.
