The use of either a silt trap or a catchpit chamber as the prefilter of an attenuation system is always installed upstream of the system. This will dramatically reduce the amount of silt, debris and litter that enters the downstream drainage system and in so, significantly improving water quality and offering increased sustainability.

Each trap is supplied with a lid and a silt bucket, also known as a catch basin, that sits within the trap and can be removed easily removed for maintenance purposes. At the first stage of an attenuation system, a prefilter serves a key purpose in ensuring water quality before it enters the attenuation system (usually a Geocellular attenuation tank). Often a silt trap or catchpit chamber, the prefilter is used to catch debris, improve water quality and prevent blockages further in the system. The requirement of either a silt trap or catchpit chamber is very much dependent on the size and composition of the attenuation system. Generally, a silt trap is more commonly used for smaller, more domestic applications whereas an inspection chamber is more typical in larger, commercial systems.
