Costs: In addition to the required reference materials, a certification fee is payable to the Lifesaving Society. Course organizers charge a fee to cover the costs of running the course.

Other important devices and indications provide you with information and directions regarding things which are not mentioned on any other road markings.

Lifesaving Instructor course: 20 hr. classroom and water time (often 40 hr. when combined with the Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Course). This checklist identifies the learning outcomes that you must achieve in order to be successful on the course.

The City of Ottawa currently holds the Lifesaving Society's Cochrane Cup, awarded annually to the Affiliate Member with the largest lifesaving program in Ontario.

A police officer, vehicle inspector, traffic director or military police officer has the right to give indications and directions in situations such as traffic control and traffic redirecting.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross certification (need not be current). Do you have the prerequisites to take this course?

These warning signs have been set up to warn of a hazard. The sign indicates what the type of hazard is. You should take extra care when you see a warning sign and possibly decrease your speed as well.

(Note that some affiliates provide materials to candidates, and some require candidates to purchase materials on their own. Double check before you purchase.)

UStraffic signs

The instructions inform the road user of the rules on a given road. Normally, the signs apply up to the point where an end sign has been erected.

A prohibitory sign informs the road user that something is prohibited. The prohibition normally applies up until the next junction unless otherwise stated in connection with the sign.

You are obligated to follow mandatory signs. They may for example state which carriageway is to be used or the direction on a certain road. A mandatory sign applies up until the next junction unless otherwise stated in connection with the sign.

Instruction & certification: Current Lifesaving Instructor Trainers teach and certify candidates. The Lifesaving Society deems its certifications to be "current" for 24 months from the certification date.
