Next are the videos itself. There are all different kinds of clips to choose from, all containing terrible hair styles. A subtle feature is that the videos often load somewhere in the middle of the clip. This creates a feeling like you’re really channel surfing in the 90's.

How do you create nostalgia? You summon something from the past. Our memories work by association. Bring up an event or popular reference from the past and there’s likely memories associated with it from that time. This is why old media is especially powerful. We remember the context around older songs, movies, and TV shows.

The first thing you notice is the faux-TV which contains the videos. It’s a real 90's model and typical of the design at the times.

Looking backwards, we as humans remember the good times, don’t record the dull times, and bury the bad times. Nostalgia fundamentally makes us think about other times, which we remember as happier and simpler (whether that’s true or not).

The idea likely was generated after watching a smattering of 90's clips of YouTube. All it took was to ask the question: “What if I could easily channel surf between these 90's clips?”

My 90's TV is yet another example of the power of structuring data. It’s a YouTube embed with a picture of a 90's TV overlaid on it. My 90's TV filters YouTube for clips only from the 90's and categorizes them into years and type of clips. This is likely all done by a machine algorithm looking for text clues in the titles of YouTube clips.
