In the event of chemical burns to the eyes, for example due to contact with acids or alkalis, immediate rinsing with an emergency shower is required to prevent permanent damage. In order to minimise possible contamination of the body, full-body showers are also used for rapid first aid after accidents. They are characterised by their simple operation. Their advantages depend on the version:
Documentation and training: Employees should be regularly trained in the use of emergency showers and the operational readiness of the showers should be documented.
Employers are obliged to take necessary occupational safety measures. Depending on the workplace and the daily tasks, this also includes the provision of emergency showers. The European guidelines on emergency showers are laid down in European standard EN-15154. It is divided into five parts and describes the use of body and eye showers with and without water supply.

Emergencyshower meaning
It is not always possible to use a permanently installed safety shower. Eye wash bottles are recommended for areas where people are not constantly working, such as battery rooms or on construction sites. They can be used to ensure that an injured person is treated within the important first few seconds. Additional eyewash bottles should be made available or a nearby eyewash station connected to the water supply should be used. Eye wash bottles have one or two ergonomically shaped eye cups. These ensure that the eyelids are open during the rinsing process so that the sterile rinsing fluid can reach the injured eye directly. The eye rinsing solution used is saline solution, also known as sodium chloride, in a 0.9 per cent concentration. The solution is pH-neutral and suitable for neutralising acids.

Quick and easy operation: The operation of emergency showers must be intuitive and uncomplicated. In an emergency, every second counts, so it is crucial that the emergency showers can be activated immediately. Levers, push buttons or pull rods should be designed in such a way that they are easy to operate even in panic situations. Clear signage and regular staff training also contribute to quick utilisation.
Effective removal of foreign bodies and chemicals: Emergency showers must be able to effectively remove both foreign bodies and chemicals from the eyes and skin. This requires a sufficient amount of water and suitable water pressure. Emergency eye showers should use gentle but effective jets of water to flush foreign bodies and chemicals from the eyes without causing additional damage. Emergency body showers should provide a steady flow of water that thoroughly rinses the affected areas of the body.

Barrier-free accessibility: emergency showers must be barrier-free to ensure that they can be reached quickly in the event of an emergency. This means that there must be no obstacles or barriers blocking access. The emergency showers should be strategically installed in highly visible and easily accessible locations so that they can be found immediately in an emergency.
