My sister gifted me Mike Massimino’s Moonshot and just in the first 50 pages, I came across two impressive approaches that I wish we all embrace. 1) Encourage the strong in your team to help the weak in your team. That said, everyone has some strengths and some weaknesses so in some cases you will need help while in others you will be of help. Grow as a team and it will be easier to conquer your dreams. 2) Even if you are a novice, if you see something wrong, speak up. If you are wrong you may be reprimanded (which I hope not) but if you are right, you may prevent something bad from happening. In some corporations speaking up is not encouraged and although it may not be causing a major worry, it would be hampering employee growth and learning. I have a bit of an allergic reaction to received wisdom generally. It’s a founder’s affliction I guess. But especially the received wisdom about teams. When it comes to the bumper-sticker stuff I’m definitely more in Michael Jordan’s camp. You may have seen the quote: ‘there’s no ‘i’ in ‘team’ but there is in ‘win’. A really good team is a place where individual strengths flourish. It’s where mavericks find expression, not where they go to disappear. It's next to impossible to pull this off at an organisational level, because it requires deep, real-time knowledge of who you've got in your squad, and what they're best at. Or it used to be, before the advent of AI. AI-assisted team design gives managers a level of insight that simply wasn't possible before, enabling them to cast the best team based on talent, experience, and individual excellence. I think the prospect of moving away from a world where the primary criterion when putting a team together is, ‘who’s available?’, is a pretty exciting one. Not just for companies, but for individuals who prefer working with people that build on their strengths.
